@quehashecho911 The NBA disciplined a coach who supported the Hong Kong protests, John Cena was forced to issue a groveling apology for same, Philadelphia kicked two pro-HK protesters out of an exhibition game because NBA wants to do business in China.

China has used every leverage point at its disposal to export its domestic censorship and propaganda regime to the west
Philippe Lemoine@phl43

My hot take is that Western liberals, I'm using the term in the broad and historically important sense here (which includes most conservatives in the West), are projecting their own attitude on China. The truth is that, despite their self-conception as tolerant, people in liberal democracies are some of the most fanatical and proselyte people in history, because they’re incapable of seeing the fact that other countries have a different political system as anything other than a direct attack on their liberal democracy. Say what you want about the Chinese, but they aren't like that. You don’t hear the Chinese lament that Western countries haven’t become one-party states, whereas the idea that we should somehow decouple from China because it failed to fulfill our expectation that it would move toward liberal democracy has become a commonplace, hardly ever challenged argument in the West. Of course, the Chinese have no compunction about bullying other countries when they think it's in their interest, but they don't care about how their political system per se. Liberals on the other hand regard the mere fact that a country isn't a liberal democracy as a direct threat to them and a permanent outrage. They can only tolerate it as long as non-liberal regimes are weak and politically subservient to the West. The Chinese just think that their model, which I think is merely an expression of nationalism for them, is better and are intent on proving it, hence their national obsession with overtaking the US, which although it also leads to stupid shit is still a lot healthier if you ask me. I say that as someone who definitely doesn’t believe that their model is better, mostly because I like to be able to read what I want and more or less say what I want without being thrown in prison or losing my property, which is why I prefer to live in the West even if it's not perfect even in that respect.

@MattNorlander Duke became the only ACC team ever to win the men's basketball, women's basketball, and football conference championships in the same calendar year.

Duke's 27-20 upset of Virginia in the ACC championship game means that Duke football and Duke men's basketball have defeated top-20 opponents on the same day for the first time ... EVER.

Officer smells weed in hotel lobby, walks the hallway and concludes that smell is greatest in front of Room 118. Gets warrant for Room 118 & searches the next morning. Finds 2,879 fentanyl pills but no marijuana. CA8: No 4th Amendment violation here. storage.courtlistener.com/pdf/2025/06/05… #N

@SethDavisHoops Since the Florida result wouldn't be known until very shortly before the bracket is revealed, I find it highly doubtful that they would want to leave open the chance of that many changes so late in the process; it would affect more than just those teams/seeds.

So ... if Houston and Florida win their conference tournaments, could they pass Duke on the overal seed line even if the Blue Devils win the ACC? Which could send Duke out West? Just wondering!

I don't believe @ESPNLunardi invented bracketology per se (I remember the late Bill Brill doing it way back when), but he definitely created this industry. And he's a total mensch. I love it when good things happen to good people.

@katiebakes I hope they really lean into it. Make the mass casualty event be a funicular derailment or the Great Heinz Ketchup Flood. (I have a feeling it's actually going to be the incel kid shooting up the music festival, which I won't enjoy but will make dramatic tv.)

The NCAA football rules committee's idea to stop faking injuries is that if a player presents as injured after the ball is spotted for play, then that player's team is charged a timeout. If the team has no timeouts, delay of game is called. ncaa.org/news/2025/2/28…

@SethDavisHoops I'm resigned to expansion at this point, but i wish there was more time to think about the bracket or set up an office pool. With 68, the first four mostly get ignored by pools, but you couldn't really do that with an expanded tourney starting Tuesday.

The people who have said that about a college football postseason from the beginning have been wrong every time. Going to 12 made the regular season AND postseason better.
Pauly@paulyccomedy

@SethDavisHoops If people think the CFP is watering down wins and losses in football, wait until they expand the tournament. It’s going to be even worse. What a joke

@ZoeTillman Literally the most routine, pro forma document in appellate practice (one that DOJ should have a template for), and they have a typo in it. It's Court of Appeals, plural, not "Appeal".

DOJ today filed notice that it's appealing the Maryland judge's preliminary injunction blocking Trump's birthright citizenship restriction exec. order, so that's now two circuits taking this up (DOJ already appealed Seattle order to the 9th) Prev: bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
