@DavidGHFrost Erasmus has always been cost neutral, the Turing scheme was unattractive for students coming here. You, as an uncivilised oaf, may not care, but when those students return to their home countries they tend to have a positive view of the UK which is invaluable to our soft power.

Fixed it: “From 2027, thousands of students, apprentices and young people will be able to study and work across Europe, *just as they can now*, gaining international experience and new skills *but at much greater cost to you, the taxpayer.*
UK Prime Minister@10DowningStreet

Britain is rejoining Erasmus+. From 2027, thousands of students, apprentices and young people will be able to study and work across Europe, gaining international experience and new skills. Run by the @BritishCouncil, the programme will unlock a range of opportunities for people from different backgrounds across the UK.

@TedUrchin @Rod__Mason My daughter has a small company and all exports to the EU have stopped since we left the single market and customs union because of additional import and postal costs, the requirement to be warehoused in the EU and additional e-commerce tax. All as a result of Brexit.

You really are a special kind of stupid. Before January 2020 nearly 50% of trade was done with the EU, and very many smaller companies benefited and very many jobs created. These will return if we rejoin the SM. Do you not understand the huge advantages in this? We have gained nothing through Brexit.

The UK has more universities in the top 50 universities in the world than France, Germany, Spain and Italy combined. So since the UK has proportionally more top universities, perhaps the EU is paying us to join Erasmus+? Unfortunately, not.

Surreal, Keir Starmer spews populist far right drivel criticising asylum seekers for getting accommodation, knowing full well that government denies asylum seekers the right to work, which if they did have, they would allow them to pay for their own accommodation while seeking asylum What a pathetic and cheap politician Starmer has turned out to be Keir Starmer, "If you're an asylum seeker you're put into accommodation at taxpayers expense and your own assets and income aren't taken into account" "Whereas if you're born here your assets and income would be taken into account"

@vivamjm @afneil Aren't Turkey and Switzerland in the customs union without being in the EU? My daughter has a small business and would certainly reap the benefits both financially. At the moment there are barriers such as VAT arrangements and import duties which make us less competitive

@afneil Can't join *the* customs union without joining the EU. .. Good to see you don't dismiss a customs union. But it seems that way to me . UK could try to negotiate *a* beneficial (partial) customs union .. But it needs an *honest* debate . UK should at least be looking to join PEM

I’m not dismissive of Customs Unions. They have a useful part to play when properly constructed and not used merely as a protectionist pretext. I am against the UK joining the EU CU while not a member of the EU. Very little upside, plenty downside.
Michael M. 🇨🇭🇳🇴🇮🇸🇱🇮🇬🇧/🇨🇾@vivamjm

I am blocked by @TerraOrBust but there many others Inc @afneil who are dismissive of a customs union. Ask yourself this. There are 16 customs unions around world Inc MERCOSUR's & Turkiye's long established one with EU. Are they all stupid? Or are there economic benefits to them?

Now explain what a new 'customs union' with the EU would actually mean, what it would cost, and then re-run the poll... 🤔
Steven Swinford@Steven_Swinford

New from @oliver_wright * Labour voters **overwhelming** back joining a customs union with the EU as Wes Streeting defies Keir Starmer to support the move * A YouGov for The Times found that 80% of those who backed Labour at the last election thought a new leader should scrap the government’s existing policy and negotiate a customs union deal with the EU * The policy is also supported by 78% of Liberal Democrat voters and even 39% of those who voted Tory at the last election * YouGov polling also shows large-scale support among Labour voters at the last election not only to join a customs union but also to rejoin the EU * It found that 73% of those who backed Labour at the last election thought the government should start negotiations to rejoin the EU. Half of all voters said they would back the approach * Starmer has ruled out joining a customs union, describing it as a ‘clear red line’. He said it would ‘unravel’ trade deals with the US and India * But Streeting used an interview with The Observer to argue that it would give Labour a distinctive message to take on Reform at the next election * He told @RSylvester1: ‘We’re not going to win the next election by trying to out-Reform Reform. That’s not who we are. Those aren’t our values and we’ve got to beat them, not join them.’ * He said Britain has taken a ‘massive economic hit’ from Brexit. ‘I’m really uncomfortable with the level of taxation in this country. We’re asking a lot of individual taxpayers, we’re asking a lot of businesses. We’ve got a level of indebtedness that we need to take very seriously. The best way for us to get more growth into our economy is a deeper trading relationship with the EU’ thetimes.com/article/f7b91a…

@Cox_A_R Erasmus is not just about Universities it's about schools, vocational training, adult education, youth schemes and sports. It offer professional development opportunities to staff and skill development to young people and adults alike. Turing didn't cover anything like as much

This is just vibes, Erasmus ‘good’, Turing ‘bad’. Policies should be judged on cost effectiveness, not signalling around the EU. We could have supercharged Turing for working class students for far less.

Studying in Italy was one of the best things I did when I was younger. But under the Tories, young people were denied this opportunity when they scrapped the Erasmus scheme. Under Labour, the UK is rejoining Erasmus giving students the chance to study or train abroad.

@ABarrosCurtis And don't forget adult education. You need to stress that the money is about investment in skills. I evaluated bids last time. A good example is Primary School teachers who were required to teach languages but had dropped them at 14. They went on intensive lang courses to upskill

One of the core objectives of the EUs Erasmus+ scheme, is to encourage a shift away from national identity and take on an EU / European identity. Why would the UK government fund a scheme whose objectives include making British students feel less British and more European???

There are lots of sensible ways a study abroad scheme could work. The UK government could just pay the fees of UK students. Or fee payments could be grouped across universities. But however it worked, if more come to the UK than leave, the UK should receive money not pay it!+

Sorry, these costings for Erasmus are nuts. Membership for the *first* year of Erasmus will be £570 million and that already includes a 30% “introductory discount”. We paid £296 million in 2019. Some discount…

@LauraTrottMP Typical. Bad faith or silliness from you, Laura. The UK was a full member of the EU in 2019. Johnson's incompetence meant we afterwards left both the bloc and Erasmus, so comparison with costings then is futile. Moreover, E+ is an enhanced scheme, with superior economic benefits.
