Billy Waugh. 50 years of service. Left for dead in Vietnam at 35. Hunting bin Laden in Tora Bora at 71. In 1948, the 18 year old Texan enlisted in the Army after the Marines rejected him at 15. He fought in Korea, became one of the earliest Green Berets in 1954, and by the 1960's was running covert night raids in Vietnam and conducting the first ever combat HALO jump in military history.   In 1965, a raid near Bong Son went wrong. Waugh was shot through both legs, an arm, a foot, and hit in the head. Trapped between enemy and friendly lines, his commander ran through the fire and dragged him to safety. That commander, Captain Paris Davis, would receive the Medal of Honor for that night. Waugh survived, went back to Vietnam, and rose to command sergeant major of MACV-SOG, the most secretive special operations unit of the war. He retired in 1972 with a Silver Star and eight Purple Hearts.   Then he became a mailman. It didn’t last. By 1977, the CIA recruited him for clandestine work. He tracked Carlos the Jackal in Sudan, disrupted Soviet espionage in the Pacific, and surveilled Osama bin Laden in Khartoum years before the world knew his name.   Weeks after 9/11, the 71 year old was on the ground in Afghanistan as part of the CIA’s first team into the country. He retired in 2005 at 75. Billy Waugh passed away on April 4, 2023. Three wars. 64 countries. Countless classified missions.

Tonight at 9:56 PM, my father went Home. In his final moments I read him testimony from his soldiers - words describing his heroism during December 2-4, 1968, the acts that earned him the Distinguished Service Cross with Valor. We had just discovered new testimony from the men who served beside him. As I read those words to him, he grew calm. And then he was gone. He left this world knowing he was a war hero. Knowing he was loved. Knowing Jesus was waiting. He was surrounded by his two dogs, his wife, and two of his daughters - Nancy and Mary. As he passed, his dog Sugar put her head in my lap. My dog Liberty put her paws on my knees. Even they knew it was time to say goodbye. On Friday I watched my father accept Christ as his Savior. Tonight I watched him go Home to meet Him. And tonight also happened to be one of his grandson’s birthdays. God doesn’t do coincidences. He chose this day on purpose. A life celebrated as another began. He fought the good fight.
