As an airframe mechanic in the Marine Corps, I installed thousands of these rivets. Since we worked on helicopters, we usually got the round head variety instead of flush ones shown. For folks who don’t know, the process involves placing an air hammer against the head and pressing a bucking bar (image below) against the opposite end. The difficulty lies in keeping the bucking bar parallel to the surface and stopping with just enough rivet compression, but not too much. The first week left your bucking bar hand bloody. But pretty quickly, you developed a callous on the thumb and forefinger that was calibrated to the exact height for a perfect rivet. Once you hit this point, these things go down in seconds and it’s incredibly rewarding work. The image below shows a guy doing it without sacrificing his finger and thumb, but should give an idea. This was a trade I thought I’d do forever, but fate had different plans.

Redpill culture and the new right in general has been a complete disaster for men who are either right now or soon will be confronted with the fact that they embraced insane, anti-social beliefs that doomed them to the kind of existential dread Asmongold is groping at here. It’s never too late to get out, but you should get out, completely shut it out of your life, or you will end up like him.

USB/BT HID is a pretty simple protocol. Once you know the structure, you can parse the bits out into the individual values. I got started parsing controller HID reports while doing RP2040 microcontroller projects. If you dig into the pico-sdk repo, you can find a basic DualShock4 example. Writing Windows/Mac driver would be bit of extra complexity on top of parsing the HID reports.

Heat Exchangers, Turbines, Transformer First it was the transformers, then it was the turbines, the next critical industrial equipment to see a supply crunch might be heat exchangers. There are myriad new technologies for transformers, turbines and heat exchangers that nobody in industry (of note) is really pursuing in anger. Transformers are essentially obsolete, there are safer, much better and more performant ways to step voltages up and down. We don’t use them because nobody makes them at scale. There are superior turbine cycles that use high pressure gases instead of steam. You can run a closed Brayton cycle with a gas turbine sans a combustion chamber. It’s 5-8% more efficient than steam. Yet we still build new steam turbines because that’s what we’ve always done. Same with heat exchangers, we now know how to make printed circuit heat exchangers. We can build them at huge scale and we use them in LNG tankers to cryogenically liquify nat gas. Do we use this new technology elsewhere in industry? No not really. We still build tube and vessel heat exchangers just like they did in 1880. Is this 3x new startups all pressing 3 different markets? Or should this be 1 larger startup? Pooling resources across adjacent products and markets? These three product categories have a big impact on energy conversion, process efficiency, and waste. When industry moves to new technologies, the risks and costs of proving the tech are often privatised onto a single project, whereas the benefits are socialised to everyone once the new superior technology is proven. This often leads to many individual projects passing on superior technologies that are newly available, because the project is too small the shoulder the cost, or the project is too big to shoulder the risk. This consistently creates a market failure in free markets, which is why China often is more advanced in these spaces. Where the CCP can force individual projects to carry new technologies for the benefit of wider society. In the West, we need to get much better at this. In reality maybe the west needs a super conglomerate that is able to build a power stack suitable for 2040, just like Tesla built their car tech stack for the future and SpaceX built the reusable rocket stack. This is the path to trillion dollar market caps. Rebuild the whole stack in one coherent business case and raise the capital necessary to get it all the market. This often demands something like $10bn of development spending and capex, but that’s a small price to pay owning the new paradigm on the power generation sector when the world needs to spend something like $5 trillion on new grid infrastructure and power generation assets. All the pieces already exist, and they exist at the necessary scale.

I'm not sure that the issue isn't more economic: Women have always been pickier than men when it comes to finding someone to settle down with (this is one of the reasons that for the majority of Western history, marriages were not really in the control of women seeking out men). Women (for all their talk about being "independent") seek out men who are financially successful before agreeing to settle down with them. A woman tends to consider a man financially successful if he: - Owns a house (in a desirable area) - Owns a late model car - Has a career making good money We do not live in a time period where that is realistic for most of our young men to accomplish this at a young age outside of luck/the grace of God. Most of the habits to accomplish this later in life are habits which are not attractive to most women (living with parents to have a lower cost of living to save up for a down payment/pay off debt, living in a less desirable area, buying dependable rather than flashy products, etc.) We have several generations of women who expect the level of wealth and success for men that hasn't been possible (broadly speaking) for decades and they'd rather spend their times with various hookups/flings rather than settle down with someone who doesn't have what's nearly impossible to have. By the time she finally realizes that what she wants is impossible, she's in her mid to late 30s and really only comes to that realization because her looks are failing her and its becoming harder and harder to maintain the flings and hookups that she had in her late teens and 20s. (For those who say "but not all women!" the women who don't think this way are not the ones getting married in their late 30s that we're talking about here)

You simply cannot have a functioning, healthy society with no-fault divorce. If marriage can be ended at any moment, without cause, it isn’t really marriage. A man has no security nor authority in his household when it can all be taken away from him at any moment. Nearly all our social problems are downstream of this.

@xwanyex This is the wrong gotcha. You're thinking about libertarians. For atheists, the gotcha is how morals only make sense for (sufficiently) intelligent people, but we're not all like that. Some people need a simple set of rules and that's ok, but it also means we all have to follow

I think it follows straightforwardly from atheism that the universe is cold and uncaring and we’re just animals like all the others and therefore there can’t possibly be anything like Right and Wrong and you genuinely are permitted to do whatever you want and there will be no final accounting. I’m not saying that that’s right or wrong. I’m just saying that it follows directly from the atheist worldview. And yet almost no atheists admit to it. Which means that they’re all boring Reddit-tier edge lords who can’t actually be trusted to tell you the truth about anything and who aren’t any more intellectually honest than the religious. They have their limit, just like everybody else. And in the end we’re all just haggling over the price.
Hunter Ash@ArtemisConsort

The reason atheists could never cohere into a subculture is because atheism, taken seriously, is right-wing, but almost all the prominent atheists are left-wing. Thus, the movement is schizophrenic. If you don’t believe in supernatural creation, then you believe that evolution by mutation and selection is the *only process* known, or even imaginable, that can construct value from non-value. We are not exempt from this: memetic and cultural evolution drive progress far more than reason. Indeed, reason is just a particularly fit metameme that evolved because it granted power to its hosts. It is not categorically special, nor is it capable of producing progress on its own. Reason can criticize but it cannot create. Evolution, taken seriously, is colder and more brutal than the most vicious human tyrant. It is alien, hideous, captivating. Cleave the emptiness in two, smash the halves into each other, then cleave the winner in two, on and on forever. I must emphasize: this is not just the only process that *has* produced progress. It is the only process that *can* produce progress in the absence of the supernatural. It follows that every transfer from the fit to the unfit which hinders the power of the giver or artificially boosts that of the receiver undoes the work of creation. The egalitarian tribe of lions where every male gets to mate and food is redistributed will be pathetically weak in a few generations compared to the tribe where the strongest male kills his rivals and has a harem. To be right-wing is to accept this process as the only real engine of truth, beauty, and power. To be left-wing is to believe in miraculous exemptions to its iron logic. PS: yes there are forms of religion and mysticism that accept this one and only Law, including some rare clear-eyed Christians. I’m not talking about those.
