Enthusiastic albeit very amateur devourer of history. Quite fond of politics but feeling increasingly politically homeless.

@laythy29 Those charges are never going to amount to anything. Money talks and rules are only for poorer clubs

I’m finding it difficult to be charmed by the ‘Magic of the FA Cup’ when one side was fined for making secret payments while the other has had 115 charges hanging over them for three years…

@petermyson @GuidoFawkes Why? He's odds on to win. Greens look like they're standing down. He's literally standing on a vote for me to sack Starmer ticket. Exactly what Reform won on last week. How's he loosing that?

@Hillsygooner Used to smoke JPS. 30p a pack of 20. Remember listening to the budget adding 6p on and thinking I can’t afford that I’m going to have to stop. Carried on for another 8 years.

If Brentford beat Manchester City how many of you wouldn't be too overly fussed if West Ham United beat us. I wouldn't want them too but it's something some of you might consider

1/ The uneasy relationship between Labour Ministers and naval numbers. Prime Minister Keir Starmer noted in his speech to the House "We are investing £300 million more in shipbuilding, & we have 13 ships on order. That is the difference between the two parties." This lacks detail

@WatkinsDyf32426 @VeteranIrish Ausfahrt is very silly part of our family history. A non travelling uncle visited us in Munster. He issued a tiny chortle on seeing his first Ausfahrt which progressively increased to full blown hysteria complete with tears at every viewing. Very childish but often humour is.

@VeteranIrish Yer had the same problem with Ausfahrt while trying to direct my dad to Sennelager with all my kit on a posting, never been before and thought it was a town name but couldn't find it on his old RAC map book, the days before mobiles and goggle maps.

A BAOR story I remember being told about two squaddies getting somewhat lost on the way back to barracks, when the passenger said “we gotta be close as that place is by our barracks, I’ve definitely seen it!! 😳😳😳🤷🏼😂😂😂👍🏻

The PM should make some effort to answer questions put to him, not constantly refer to the Opposition's policies. This is Prime Minister's Questions not Leader of the Opposition's Questions. What is the point of this process?

So any news on HMS Dragon, which has unwillingly become a global symbol of British military unpreparedness? Is it still in port? Any word on when it might sail for Cyprus?

@spearstwit @Shutbloodydoor @sharrond62 I live in not desperately rural Dorset and get ONE postal delivery a week. Unless it rains in which case who knows. Curiously despite the amazing amount of time the PO has to sort it we frequently have to do the final sort and deliver it ourselves.

@Shutbloodydoor @sharrond62 My parents used to tell tales of posties battling through snow drifts (back when we had proper winters) to deliver mail in rural Aberdeenshire. I'm not sure that would happen now!

So true. We also had one tv, radio one at breakfast, one static phone. One pair of jeans, one pair of trainers, one best outfit & waited till birthdays for a gift which my goodness did we look after. A milk man, a bread man, the coal man, a window cleaner & twice daily post man. Visits to the butchers & homemade food. Satsumas as a treat at Christmas. Yet we were so much happier …

@hw97karbine @artyfartystuff I think he was born in India. During the BoB he picked up the nickname Green to Black after he was shot down into the channel. He said the landing was perfect till the spitfire touched down and was dragged under at which point everything went rapidly “from green to black”.

@artyfartystuff I believe Ryder was English and the name came from the fact that this was a "presentation aircraft" funded by the people of New Zealand

The French claim, somewhat more dubiously that a charge was ordered & the Regiment of Hussars attacked in force. The Dutch had been ordered to offer no resistance on the 21st Jan. It is likely a parlay took place. It has led to some of the most spectacular images of the era.

#OnThisDay 23 January 1795, a French hussar cavalry regiment captured 14 Dutch ships that were frozen at anchor in the 2-mile stretch between Den Helder & Texel island. The cavalry moved across the frozen Zuiderzee bay & completed their unique capture of the Dutch fleet.

@sommecourt The worry is, and sadly I believe it may already be to late, is that the generations of historians educated so to speak by “books” will die out. Their replacements educated by internet & AI will increasingly not spot the fakes and the funnel of rubbish will endure
