For those wondering what it means to be a Christian, perhaps the following will help.
****
Being a Christian has to do with realizing that we, as individuals, have a problem that we can’t fix. This problem can be described as failing in the two great commandments that Jesus proclaimed: [1] Love God and [2] Love your neighbor. These two commandments are not just targets. They are requirements. By meeting these requirements we become “Right with God”, or “Righteous”.
However, we are not commanded to “try”, or to “do our best”. We are commanded to accomplish completely. Upon self examination, we realize that we “miss the mark”. We don’t accomplish completely. We fail. We sin. We are all different in the ways we fail but all the same in result. Instead of righteous in God’s sight, we are unrighteous. Unrighteousness is unacceptable to God and Jesus’ death on the cross reflects God’s disposition toward it. So, we have a problem, and it’s a big one. In a real sense we’re doomed from the moment we’re born. Condemnation is inevitable, except for one thing. Again, Jesus. God provided the “fix” to our problem by Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. The sacrifice was for you, and for me, and for whomever will believe.
Being a Christian simply means to accept by faith that Jesus died for your own personal “misses”. It’s believing that the consequences due you for your own sins fell completely on Jesus. By doing so God “declares” you to be righteous. Rather than earning righteousness through perfect behavior, God declares you to be righteous through faith in perfect Jesus. God provided the target for human behavior and also the fix for when we miss the mark. It’s actually quite amazing.

“For what does scripture say? “Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” Now, to the workman wages are not paid as a favor but as an obligation: while to the person who does not work by Law, but whose faith rests on Him who declares the ungodly righteous, to him his faith is accounted for righteousness.” Romans 3:3-5
