This is a savvy legal move by Trump. May 1: War Powers letter formally ends hostilities, preserves force posture, asserts Article II constitutional authority. May 3: "Project Freedom" announced as a humanitarian operation, not military. Monday: US Navy escorts neutral commercial ships through Hormuz under freedom of navigation rights. If Iran fires on it: that is Iran starting a new conflict. Trump is responding defensively, not attacking. No new War Powers clock starts because the US did not initiate hostilities. Iran did.
Chris Rollins@ThePowerAudit

Trump just announced "Project Freedom" beginning Monday morning, Middle East time. We are nearing the climax. "If, in any way, this Humanitarian process is interfered with, that interference will, unfortunately, have to be dealt with forcefully." Parse this carefully. He is sending US warships to escort neutral commercial vessels out of the Strait of Hormuz. If Iran challenges the escort, he has his trigger. If Iran lets them pass, the blockade is broken and Iran is humiliated. 35 Tankers have taken off from Tel Aviv today. Saturdays total was 14. The evidence package for this move was built today by Iranian moves. UKMTO WARNING 050-26 (1130 UTC): IRGCN small craft attacked a northbound bulk carrier 11NM west of Sirik, Iran. Crew safe. UKMTO ADVISORY 051-26 (0900 UTC): Vessels at Ras Al Khaimah directed via VHF broadcast to vacate anchorage. Confirmed by multiple ship masters.

James - No sir, there is a near zero chance. The cost synergies, greater use of and capacity for fuel hedges, increased access to capital markets, lower cost of capital, plane resources, parts sourcing, labor structure, gate access, and management talent would have all created a fundamentally different airline. All there would be is a company whose employees were not out of a job, vendors who would be getting paid, and creditors not losing billions. This is a catastrophic failure of excessive state intervention and no spin will change that.

If JetBlue's acquisition of Spirit had been approved, there's a good chance JetBlue would now be headed into bankruptcy, too.

@rsvpvspr @DropSiteNews We never had true free trade. And globalization was just American corporations attacking US unions and workers by outsourcing their jobs (mostly to China).

🇨🇳 China Invokes Blocking Statute for First Time China’s Ministry of Commerce has for the first time activated its 2021 Blocking Rules, ordering all Chinese firms and individuals not to comply with U.S. sanctions targeting five independent Chinese oil refineries accused of purchasing Iranian crude. Beijing called the U.S. measures, imposed under two executive orders, an “unjustified” and “improper” use of extraterritorial law. The move puts multinational companies operating in both markets in direct legal conflict: compliance with U.S. sanctions now risks violating Chinese law, and vice versa. Global banks and firms with dollar exposure face secondary sanctions risk if they continue dealing with the affected refineries. Analysts describe the order as a significant step toward competing legal frameworks for global trade, accelerating the path to potential economic “decoupling” between the two powers.
Henry Gao@henrysgao

MOFCOM just invoked the blocking statute for the first time, ordering all firms not to recognise, enforce, or comply with US sanctions imposed under EO 13902 & 13846 targeting 5 Chinese teapot refineries for their involvement in Iranian oil transactions. The decoupling is coming

So Trump is saying war should continue because scores must be settled for what Iran has “done to Humanity, and the World, for 47 years.” That is a new objective for this war and implies its beginning or end had nothing to do with the nuclear issue. It is also makes the case for every country, especially in the global south abused by colonialism, to reopen the file on their old grievances, and line up to wage wars to settle old scores. It seems most of humanity opposes this war Trump wants to wage on their behalf and may be more interested in talking about other abuses of humanity.

For decades, prehistorical evidence was forced through a left-wing theory filter: primitive communism, the noble savage, and the myth that violence came from hierarchy, property, and “the system.” But the bones kept talking, and they disagree with the left.

Top journalist Ana Kasparian exposes absolute insanity. The Trump administration gave a $17.4M no bid contract to renovate fountains. The exact same job under a competitive contract would cost only $3.3M. Washington is intentionally looting taxpayers to enrich their cronies.

The War on Poverty didn’t conquer poverty, it entrenched it, fostering a permanent underclass through dependency and family breakdown. The Inflation Reduction Act did no such thing, it fueled more spending and inflationary pressure. The Patriot Act was anything but patriotic, erecting a vast, permanent surveillance state that eroded civil liberties in the name of security. Time and again, these grandly named “Acts” deliver the precise opposite of their promises. Government interventions routinely ignore second-order consequences, distorted incentives, unintended behaviors, and cascading failures, leaving us with more problems than we started with. Perhaps it’s time for Washington to step back from micromanaging the economy and people’s lives, before the unintended damage grows even worse.

Basically every Israel-Palestine debate goes like this: "Israel did X." "Yeah, because the Palestinians did Y." "Yeah, because Israel did Z." "Yeah but only because the Arabs did A." But if you bring the debate back far enough in time, eventually you get to the part where the western world forcibly dropped a brand new ethnostate on top of a pre-existing civilization without the permission of — and to the extreme detriment of — the people who were already living there. Sure you can go further back and say "Oh yeah well the Jews lived there thousands of years ago," but that's just silly. There's no valid reason to believe some Jewish guy in New York City even has any meaningful lineage connecting him to that land more strongly than any random Muslim in Turkey or wherever, and even if there was, it would still be absurd to cite ancient history as the basis for a territorial claim. I'm only a few generations removed from my ancestry in Ireland and Scotland, but it would be ridiculous for me to show up demanding the home of someone who lives there. So the original source for the grievance is clearly the artificial creation of an ethnonationalist state in the mid-20th century, and the push by Zionists and western imperialists to make it happen. And how has that decision worked out? You see the results before you. Generations of nonstop violence and abuse, culminating in the slaughter and chaos throughout the middle east today. This means that creating Israel was a mistake. A mistake that needs to be corrected. Zionists will collapse into a shrieking pile of vitriol and hyperbole when you say this, claiming you're calling for the extermination of Jews, but this is false. Certainly ending a national order premised on putting the interests of Jews before Palestinians and righting the wrongs of the past would inconvenience a lot of the Jewish people who've been living there, but there's no basis for the claim that it would entail their deaths. Apartheid South Africa was dismantled without the extermination of millions of white people, and there's no reason to believe the dismantling of apartheid Israel would entail the extermination of Jews. The Israel experiment has been tried, and it has failed. It is time to try something else.
