Listen to this from 1m20 - this is Lord Bethell, ex Conservative health minister. "...the treasury took the view that spending money on health was basically money down the drain, and all that would happen is that it would lead to people living longer & costing us more... "

‘Those reforms were a mistake’ Former Conservative health minister Lord Bethell says NHS reforms introduced by his government in 2012 were ‘regretful:’ #newsnight

Newsnight are bonkers to mention an opinion poll in Gorton & Denton with a sample of just 143. 1,000 is the normal respectable sample size.

@charliemansell @MichaelLCrick @FindoutnowUK I've already had a ding dong today with someone over quoting betting odds. They can't accept that odds have more to do with betting patterns than an objective judgement.

@MichaelLCrick @FindoutnowUK But people seem to be quite happy to cite self-selecting betting odds as part of social norming news stories and no one seems to criticise that.

LibDem MP Max Wilkinson makes an important Point of Order, "During #PMQs I was sitting behind Nigel Farage I made some comments related to his second earnings" "A Reform UK social media account digitally manipulated those comments to give the appearance that I had described Nigel Farage using a four letter expletive" "This is misinformation, it is fake news, this is Trumpian tactics" "It was reported to Elon Musk's X, no response was received" "If footage in this House is allowed to be digitally manipulated for political ends, in the name of members of this House, then that puts at risks, proceedings in this house" "And that puts at risk democracy" "I raise this point of order today to put on the public record the facts, so my constituents and everyone else can know exactly what happened'

Staggeringly misleading & irresponsible article by @Daily_Express online. Neither I nor my site've ever said that. It's a perversion of our "earn under £35k & it's worth checking a benefits calc to see if you're missing out on owt" into dangerous, trite clickbait.

@CoherentMoney @MartinSLewis Platforms give scammers the tools to operate. Making it even easier for them? That's just crazy.

@MartinSLewis There are always going to be places to scam people. Humanity should be focussing attention on going after the scammers themselves, not the platform’s individually. That just shifts the problem elsewhere.

This looks a seismic change. It affects all areas. Focusing only on my work area though. Having sued facebook over scam ads in the past. Is there's no mention of scams here. Will this free up more people to be ripped of?

These alleged false CV claims by Rachel Reeves are serious. Unless she can produce a good explanation, she should resign as Chancellor & MP - or be sacked. I know that won't happen, but brushing the allegations aside will only encourage others to make false claims.

Carl Sagan had a good idea of what could lay ahead. It applies to any modern, liberal democracy, including the UK. Because over time, this is what capitalism does - it concentrates wealth & power in the hands of a few. Building new, democratic, participatory institutions and capacities - from water to social media - is the only answer to the rising alt-right. That means taking on the billionaires, banks & corporations that have too much of it and redistributing it throughout our democracy. 'Populism' isn't the problem. Rather it's the answer. “I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time -- when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness... The dumbing down of American is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30 second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance” Carl Sagan
Carole Cadwalladr@carolecadwalla

Please read this. It's literally been 8 years in the writing. The first wave of tech disruption of democracy 2016-2024 is over. What starts now is something much, much worse: the age of information chaos. 1/ theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
