@Jnel03 @Stormingurmom @Brien_Jackson But housing is, for Americans, their largest asset. If you can get a house young, you can easily trade up to better and access better lines of credit using the equity you put into it, versus losing 15-20 years of accrued equity to rent, which will be a $500k+ loss in that time.

@Stormingurmom @Brien_Jackson This is where the "economy" is more than just housing. It's purchasing power, employment, real wages, income distribution, discretionary income, savings rates, etc. Housing is a large expense, but everyone's housing costs are different (rent vs own, paid-off vs mortgage, etc.)

@Brien_Jackson nar.realtor/magazine/real-… 33% are receiving cash gifts from parents, 16% using inheritance, so more than 50% need money from someone else. Buying "fixer-uppers" in unsafe areas in cities like Detroit, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, St. Louis, with a median house price around $230k.

@gettingleanbro @escapefrommelos Old Navy makes tall versions of their sizes, I’m sure other places do too. Their tees are comfy, not transparent, reasonably slim, come in two dozen colors and are like $6 on sale. Great basics for layering or just chilling without feeling either fat or like wearing a crop top.

@escapefrommelos Curse of the lean, tall man: I buy L and it fits, but is too short. I buy XL and it feels like i'm wearing a trashbag. Thanks fatso.

@mattaddis1985 @thetolerantweft Now a 13 year old can go algorithmically go 10 levels deep into a genre I've spent my whole life listening to and namedrop artists it took me years to discover. For $10 a month! They don't know how good they have it.

@mattaddis1985 @thetolerantweft I would have smothered my parents to be able to see a top 100 list and listen to anything interesting immediately. It was a literal foundational life event that I discovered a Rolling Stone "Top 200 albums of all time" issue at 13 and spent the next 5 years acquiring them all!

@OwedNada @tumbleweedrun @ellonico … and you probably get 75% of the effect for 1/10th the cost. And get a wholesale discount on mats by ordering 30 million of them, so $350 million. $50 million a year for overhead for running the system and delivering them and you’re still coming out ahead by 20x.

@OwedNada @tumbleweedrun @ellonico There are 350 million people in America. Divide that in two for the average household size. 175m x 11 = 1.75b. Household falls cost $50b/year and kill 32k; cut them by 5% and it overall pays for itself and saves a thousand lives. Make it opt in, or only send to SNAP/Medi-care…

@laskin I've almost always seen it primarily gendered as a male thing - to the point that I remember seeing "a woman's version of a midlife crisis" as a novel idea in some magazine years ago. Men are usually portrayed as balding, fatter, out of shape, and impotent. What's more cringe?

@laskin And if it's not as cliche as that, then it's still portrayed as a kind of reversion to youth, an embarrassing dad re-entering young spaces to either relive their glory days or try to experience what they missed out the first time now that they have resources and a fear of death.

Why is midlife crisis so cringe? Why even frame it as a crisis? I’ve done a lot of the most stereotypical mlc stuff but it feels to me like anything but a crisis. Like what is this idea that you should fully know yourself at 25 and never try a new thing? How is that cooler?

@MattWil44346810 @suchnerve Problem is sub reactors use weapons-grade uranium (93% U-235) which enables their small size and high efficiency (and secret classification). Civilian facilities use 5% to 20% U-235 and Iran's stockpile is 40-60%. Much more expensive + too risky to make 100s of civilian reactors.

Slowness is the same reason I don’t encourage new nuclear fission power plants. They take so long to go from the proposal stage to the operational stage that we simply don’t have time for that. We need to decarbonize NOW, and only renewables + batteries can do that.

i’ve been thinking of what could even be said about such a tragedy. someone said it best that trans people are “born so late and die so young”. we uproot our lives and transition and live more life than anyone else ever does and society punishes us for it. we deserve better

According to the King County Medical Examiner’s office report this afternoon: 19-year-old Juniper Blessing has been identified as the victim of the stabbing. A memorial for the student, who is transgender, has been growing in UW’s Red Square this week. @komonews

@Timmetie @sen_ebooks Since writing is universal everyone thinks they have something to say, but the average reader is as capable of giving a true critique of a book as they are of a painting, symphony, sculpture, or dance routine. They can appreciate them but not understand how they're made.

@Timmetie @sen_ebooks Anyone who doesn't have a background in writing or a degree can't really give useful feedback other than "I liked it" or "I didn't like it." They can only give feedback on plot points or what they found boring. A good agent or editor makes more money than the authors they help.

@platedpanda @bentrified You can't predict what'll happen. I was prepared to live a pauper's life because of learned helplessness, having a "useless degree" (having ANY education no matter what it's in will get you more money and respect from employers in the long run) and no real monetizable skills.

@platedpanda @bentrified I spent almost my entire 20s friendless and alone living in my mom's house in a rural town of 10,000. I made a friend online who let me move to their major metropolis for cheap, another one of my friends moved there at the same time and helped me land that first $10/hr job.
