@Sarah_pdx A poll seperates the issue of personality from that of the actual campaign strategy. Convention must both choose the candidate and the strategy, otherwise we are just playing a political celebrity game, whether the candidate is AOC, Bernie, Jabari Brisport, or Theo Chino.

Let’s be honest: the NPC Is shadow-boxing over AOC. I think some are worried a poll would show our members support her. I bet it would. But I think a poll which offers feedback and nuance will show members support her *with* many fears and criticisms!
Reform & Revolution DSA@dsaRandR

We believe the majority of members see both the real potential of a candidate like AOC, and correctly have serious concerns about her. This will be true for any candidate. Our process aims to confront this, rather than ignoring it.

@TheDuhalde @davidimarcus This had to come up 3 weeks too late for me to promote the Reading Group I am doing of this book (History of Socialism in the US) with NYC DSA. :( Jokes aside, great book. Also interesting material in Noyes's 1870 History of American Socialisms on utopians/christian socialism.

No knock on the piece—and good for NYT to cover—but this massive gap right here is one reason I’m working on a history of American socialism. There was plenty of socialism in the US between the Owenite era and the founding of the SPA!

@therealmugomar @clearlyis What is probably more relevant is that Morales abstained during the 2021 Speaker vote, alongside many others, including non-DSA progressives.

I CAN'T FUCKING TELL IF PEOPLE KNOW THE REASON WHY MORALES IS UNENDORSED BY RI DSA??? MOTHERFUCKER VOTED TO SUPPORT A MOB BACKED SPEAKER OF RI HOUSE; THAT OF WHICH WAS DEMOCRATICALLY DECIDED (BYLAWS) HE OUGHT NOT TO DO TO MAINTAIN AND RECEIVE ENDORSEMENT FROM RI DSA!!!
J. Ryder🪿@harbingerofwoke

Wasn’t going to chime in on this, but some of the takes here are absolutely ridiculous. Gustavo is an individual, who is allowed to support whomever he wants even when they are not DSA endorsed. Just as Zohran is allowed to endorse Brad Lander without DSA endorsement, yet no one was calling for disciplining him in that moment (and rightly so). This does not undermine the democracy of DSA as it is not an organizational endorsement but a personal one. Further, DSA must realize that as long as it continues to platform and institutionalize its sectarian and abstentionist tendencies, it will force its members (as well as the masses more broadly) to seek other means to do socialism. It is not an individual’s fault that they must go outside DSA in order to do socialism, it’s OUR accountability as an organization to make sure that the path of socialism is 1:1 with the objectives and MO of DSA, and anything less will create reasons to engage other means of organizing to fill that void. We must fill the void left by marginal abstentionism with institutionalized mass politics in DSA or the socialist pole in this country will go on without us.

@phronem0s @anatman42 @unionGustavo Do you propose to “manage capitalism” by knee capping anyone who’s got a modicum of power on the left? It feels good to stay small and shout from the sidelines but you’re doing the capitalist’s work for them.

@voteprincemongo Wait, this is what I did for my undergrad "capstone" (we called it a thesis, cuz the program called it that). Anyway, I am not proud of mine at all, it was terrible and events proved me wrong in a matter of months. I have been meaning to basically re-start the project.

I'm quite proud of the paper I wrote analyzing app-based gig workers during COVID thru the lens of Marx's theory of alienation... But I'm not gonna pretend it's serious academic work. I wrote it over the period of 2 months and performed zero original quantitative research

@ci_case I reiterate that we simply have different goals. My goal is the abolition of class society. I get the sense from your banner that yours is to elect more democrats.

@phronem0s It’s not that deep sis! I promise you. You’re losing sight of the forest for the trees. We’re at a watershed moment in American history and people like you are not meeting the moment

@ci_case Not caring about the politics of a political question is a rather shortsided decision. The appeal to authority is also rather undignified, especially when Gustavo isn't even representative of the area in question.

@phronem0s Look, I just don’t care. Gustavo is the co-chair and sees fit to help fundraise so that a like minded candidate can have a chance against PAC funding. It’s not really deeper than that and I’m gonna stick beside him 🫡

@ci_case I do not think we have the same standard for "winning". Disagreement about what our goals are is not "whining" it is dealing with actual politics and not just defaulting to progressive liberalism.

@phronem0s Exactly. Like I said, it’s not productive and just comes off as whiny. You either want to win or not. And if you don’t, you need to get out of our way. Respectfully

@ci_case Personally, I don't think electing a non-DSA progressive counts as winning anything, so I think we just have different goals, but that is the point of making our differences clear.

@ci_case I don't get a say in what? Whether the fundraiser happens? I didn't claim one they can do it and I can clarify for people that the candidate is not DSA and state my disagreements with their orientation toward other chapters.

@phronem0s i don't see how it is dismissive for DSA members to support on an individual basis a candidate for office in a race where RI DSA is not supporting any candidate

Clarity is important. The fundraiser has both NYC DSA chapter chairs and many of our SIOs. It doesn't use chapter branding, but they didn't make any effort to make it clear that it is not a DSA event. I am not outraged, per se, but there is a lack or respect for RI DSA in this.
نیکان@daawaga

I'm acc thankful for the outrage at this bc it so clearly demonstrates a chunk of DSA exists only to antagonize NYC. To be mad at individuals for supporting a non-DSA candidate is mind-bogglingly ridiculous. I guarantee everyone mad here has at some pt promoted a non-DSA campaign

@CentristSlayer1 @anatman42 @unionGustavo Absolute opposition is the point of the rule. It refuses to manage capitalism and therefore avoids being stuck with the responsibility of disciplining the working class to keep things running.

@phronem0s @anatman42 @unionGustavo You’re not inhibiting capitalist rule by shunning candidates in your own organization over meaningless votes. You’re handing the capitalist class unchecked power because it makes it nearly impossible to attain it for movement candidates.

@CentristSlayer1 @anatman42 @unionGustavo It depends what your priorities are. I would consider working class empowerment to be something that the working class has to do for itself. No representative can grant that. Running for office serves as a way to inhibit capitalist rule, and therefore pure oppositionism is needed

@phronem0s @anatman42 @unionGustavo I get that- I’m not always happy with every decision our SiO’s make either. But to go the nuclear option of unendorsement over something like this is indicative of a chapter that doesn’t actually believe in building a project for working class empowerment. It’s vanity.

@CentristSlayer1 @anatman42 @unionGustavo I appreciate the reflection. I would note that Morales didn't vote for the speaker in 2021, he along with several others abstained that year. He flipped to voting in favor in 2023. This wasn't a default setting, he flipped against policy.
