I'm starting something probably unreasonable: I'm a complete beginner and I'm going to try and build an open-world pirate game with AI as my co-captain. As a kid, I was enthralled with all things PIRATE🏴‍☠️ Games like Sid Meier's Pirates!, AC Black Flag, and Sea Dogs are my inspiration for what I'm trying to build. I hope I can do those games proud. My first goal is tiny: one boat, one ocean, one cannon, one reason to keep sailing. No promises. Just building in public and seeing how far this ship gets. Follow along to see my failures and potentially something really cool. ARRGH

1/5 Super happy and I can't beleive I built Field of Command in less than 30 days for #vibejam🎖️ This really does show the true power of AI! All with a full-time job, 11-month-old, and a vacation 👀 Naturally, I decided to build the most complicated type of game from scratch, an RTS 🤣 It started with cubes. It ended a game 🧵👇

Honestly my only goal is to make a game that I get addicted to myself. If I achieve that, then nothing else matters

There’s a false dichotomy in the game dev community where people think you have to choose between making something you love and making something that makes money. You don’t, you can do both.

Day 2 of building an open-world pirate game with AI🏴‍☠️ Built out the visual direction a little more using gpt-image 2.0 - ship style guide - ports & harbors - ocean/island/coastline sheet - HUD/UI style - dock props - ship upgrades - menu concepts -Also locked in a name for now: A Pirate’s Claim. Let me know what you think or if you have other suggestions. Today was all about locking in the identity #gpt #ai #codex

Btw, I’m building the entire pirate game on codex using GPT-5.5 It’s insane and I feel like I’m driving a lambo everytime I send a prompt and watch it go crazy. What a time to be alive

🏴‍☠️Day 1 of building an open world pirate game using AI. -It’s still ugly, clunky, and barely held together… but it’s officially playable. And this was built in only 3 detailed prompts. -I can sail around, fight enemy ships, sink them, earn upgrades, and actually see the HUD now. -It's still just a simple arena but for someone who's never built a game, I'm pretty proud of the progress already. Next step: make the ship combat feel good. (And yes, I know I'm slow)
