This thread is an ode to the small apartments of my neighborhood, Fresno’s Tower District. I live in a single family house, but I love the variety of housing types. Big houses, a little houses, accessory apartments, duplexes, fourplexes, large apartment buildings—we have it all.

I want to live in a cute affordable neighborhood like this without having to own a car. Is that so hard to ask? (Natashahusein)

Had a great time in Downtown Fresno for Art Hop last Thursday. The summer heat backed off a bit and people were out in force.

My last column: A tribute to newspaper readers and one in particular. My dad, John Knight, died Sunday night after reading the San Francisco Chronicle for 70 years. He was thrilled to see my byline for 24 of them. Will miss him and the Chronicle so much. sfchronicle.com/sf/bayarea/hea…

@AlexFischCC @dotTsch @mnolangray Stop by Chinatown, too. Grab tacos at La Elegante, which the Food Network said were the best in CA. Visit Chef Paul’s, which got a thumbs up from Tyra Banks. Kogetsu-do’s mochi is amazing, and Central Fish is a must-see. You can also see HSR construction and new housing there.

@AlexFischCC @dotTsch @mnolangray If you're here on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday evening, check out Gazebo Gardens. By day it is a nursery, but by night it is a live music, craft beer, and food truck Mecca.

@AlexFischCC @dotTsch @mnolangray The Tower District is a great neighborhood with lots of excellent architecture as well as eating and drinking places. Have breakfast at Irenes, and grab a beer a Sequoia Brewing, Goldsein's or Spokeasy. Check out a band and have an epic cocktail at Howlin' Wolf.

@AlexFischCC @dotTsch @mnolangray Huntington Boulevard is a gorgeous street that has a big grassy median which used to feature a streetcar. It is lined with some of the best historic homes in central California.

@AlexFischCC @dotTsch @mnolangray If you want to explore a really cool historic industrial area that I think will be the next hip and trendy mixed use neighborhood, explore the South Van Ness district. There are some amazing buildings and a ton of untapped potential.

@AlexFischCC @dotTsch @mnolangray The Brewery District is great. Anchor is the grand daddy of Fresno Breweries, Tioga-Sequoia. 411 Brewing, Full Circle, and Procreations are also nearby and great. That area also has a couple of craft cocktail joints that are really good: the Modernist and Bespoke.

@AlexFischCC @dotTsch @mnolangray There are a lot of good things to eat and drink in Downtown, too. Be sure to hit up Libelula for epic farm-to-table food. South of Shaw has great craft beer and amazing pizza. Near SoS you can also see a bunch of recent infill housing.

@AlexFischCC @dotTsch @mnolangray Yes! Downtown is great--we're still in the early-to-middle stages of revitalization, but there is a lot to see and do. For urban site seeing, check out Fulton Street, which is lined with several gorgeous 1920s midrises. Our water tower is the literal best, so check it out, too.
