Hasan Piker says the designated terrorist organization Hamas is 1,000 times better than Israel. His statement outraged many — who now just want to write him off. That's a mistake. He has a massive audience and is emerging as one of the major voices of his generation. Those of us who disagree owe him — and his audience — a real argument. Here's mine … And my position doesn’t come from ignorance about oppression. For a big chunk of my life, I was a grassroots activist — because of the pain of my own people. During those years, I was lucky enough to learn from elders who had been in the Black Panther Party, in SNCC, in the ANC. These were people who had to choose whether to pick up the gun — and how to use it if they did. They taught me this: even in armed struggle, there are principles. No women. No children. No rapes. No kidnapping. Mandela held that line. Amílcar Cabral held that line. You don't become what you're fighting. Hamas fails that test. They are not fighting for MORE freedom for Palestinians. They're fighting for less. They want theocracy, not democracy. And their means? They don’t use principled armed struggle (hitting military targets). They use terrorism (targeting civilians). The vast majority of Americans — including those who sympathize with the Palestinian cause — reject terror tactics. Reasonable people would agree on three principles: secure homelands for both peoples; no hatred for Jews or Muslims; and protection for all civilians. Hamas’ approach undermines all three. That's the conversation Piker's audience deserves. Not name-calling.

@rachaelmbade You've gotta be kidding me. Compare Dems electeds rhetoric to the typical Trump/GOP rhetoric.

The Tolentino/Piker microlooting episode is a microcosm of a broader media problem where culture writers/editors get to do policy/politics takes but don't have any actual expertise on the topic theargumentmag.com/p/the-new-york…

Noteably, Spanberger is also getting hit hard by the right for what she's doing. And the attacks are working. Yet few on the "progressive" side show up to vociferously defend her. Rather, they attack her. What's the incentive structure being created for Democrats, here?
Tim@trouble_man90

Leftists hate that Spanberger is doing progressive things without bowing down at their feet. She doesn’t partake in their jargon or lingo, or perform progressivism the way they do. She’s passing progressive legislation and doing it while being a normie liberal and they don’t like it

So anyone who works for a company or has a belief system or supports an ideology Hasan Piker disagrees with can be murdered with impunity? All based on based on association or assumption? No due process? No questions asked? This is disgusting, immoral and dangerous.
Pirate Wires@PirateWires

In a new NYT interview, Hasan Piker says that many “understand” Luigi Mangione killing United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson because Thompson himself was guilty of “social murder”

This has become an increasingly common tactic. A few years ago, once some universities started taking substantial disruptions seriously and escorting hecklers out of events, would-be hecklers got better at coordinating. Instead of disrupting all at once and making removal easy, they began interrupting intermittently. Ann Coulter’s appearance at Cornell in 2022 was a good example. This tactic puts administrators and security in a bind. Preemptively removing suspected hecklers before any substantial disruption occurs raises its own free speech and due process concerns. The best response to coordinated, intermittent disruption is disciplinary charges for those involved. Due process must be afforded, of course. But behavior that gets rewarded gets repeated. If no one is punished for shutting down speech on a college campus, it will continue.
Greg McNeal@GregoryMcNeal

I was the moderator for this discussion. The protests were planned days in advance and coordinated on Signal and Whatsapp. They started disrupting before the introductions were complete, they weren’t there to hear, listen, or question, they were there to disrupt in a coordinated manner.

This is not normal discourse. We don’t have to accept this as an acceptable line of thinking. In fact, you should reject it with every fiber in your being. These people hate normal Americans and the social norms that make our lives enjoyable and safe.

At some point in the last decade, a segment of the left decided that their moral indignation and policy purity meant that they could become assholes to basically everyone who wasn't already a convert and still (somehow?) achieve their political goals. It remains mystifying.
Adam Kovacevich@adamkovac

It remains remarkable to me how uninterested the anti-corporate populists are in persuasion and broadening the appeal of their movement. Their standard reaction to any substantive criticism is name-calling and calling critics corrupt.
