My undergrad work in the Brem lab investigating how alleles that confer a complex, interspecific trait (thermotolerance) interact is out! We saw a generally monotonic trend of improvement at high temp, and these alleles governed a tradeoff in the cold, too journals.plos.org/plosgenetics/a…

The same western blot image used 23 times in 14 different papers by one Japanese team. The image has been labelled as representing a range of experiments and proteins. This is the most I have ever seen. Perhaps it is a record?

Our live tissue clearing paper is out in @naturemethods! We achieved optical clearing of mammalian brain tissues without compromising normal neuronal function. Big congrats to @Shigenori774 and our wonderful collaborators! 🎉 nature.com/articles/s4159… (1/10)

today’s experiment: chimera. a little tool that let’s you realtime morph through a design system matrix generated by 4 reference images. this one was inspired by listening to @jameygannon talk about her process on Dive Club with @ridd_design and How I AI with @clairevo. her approach to choosing moodboards over prompts made me wonder what might be possible if we applied that same approach to generative UI. and after a few dead ends, the idea turned into chimera. the results are very generic at the moment but I might tune it up if people seem interested. the big reminder for me is how much more inspiring a tool feels when you can explore in realtime instead of waiting for results every time you make a change. lots more things to try in that direction.

New: Yann LeCun's startup, Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI), says it raised more than $1B in seed funding at a $3.5B valuation to build AI models that can understand the physical world. LeCun has been pitching AI world models for years. Now he's betting big on them with AMI.

We've uploaded a fruit fly. We took the @FlyWireNews connectome of the fruit fly brain, applied a simple neuron model (@Philip_Shiu Nature 2024) and used it to control a MuJoCo physics-simulated body, closing the loop from neural activation to action. A few things I want to say about what this means and where we're going at @eonsys. 🧵

For my use cases, I did a lot of qualitative and quantitative AB testing. 3.1 Flash Lite is outperforming or equal to 3 Flash across the board for translation, summarization, classification. While being 10x faster and 1/2 the price! Your mileage may vary! But at least do tests!

Gemini 3 Pro preview is being deprecated in just two weeks! Is this the fastest deprecation of a major model to date? Wow.

you are currently witnessing the collapse of visual scarcity as an economic category. think about what expensive visual production actually was in the past... it was a tax on the translation between imagination & perception. every ad campaign, every film, every architectural rendering, & every product mockup was fundamentally an arbitrage on the difficulty of making pics. that entire extractive layer is just evaporating right now. crazy cuz humans have ~fixed visual processing bandwidth but we're about to face essentially infinite visual supply. this might be the obesity crisis but for images. our visual appetites evolved in conditions of scarcity & now we're getting high fructose corn syrup for the eyes. nobody has a good model for what this does to aesthetic sensibility long term. language has always been a lossy compression of experience. the reason lawyers & bureaucrats & writers had power was because they could operate in that compressed medium fluently. if you can just show things instead of describing them, that's a massive redistribution of communicative power away from the verbally gifted toward... idk, ppl with good taste? good spatial reasoning? it's unclear who wins but it's definitely not the same ppl who won before.

Nano Banana 2 is out. I had early access for the past few days, and tested it across a ton of prompts. It's leveled up for a bunch of use cases - infographics, ads, action shots, even cartoons. And it's crazy fast! Some styles + prompts you should try 👇
