@0xThiru I get that because I experienced it too. I found Tamil difficult, and my school didn't offer French or German as an alternative, even though some schools do. I think that's a genuine limitation of the system.

@potato_devx then why it is not available to everyone. I mean most schools mandate tamil through not providing any other options? Is it fair?

Friend argued today that TN "imposes" Tamil through State Board since students can't switch to another language. I disagreed. Kerala teaches Malayalam. Maharashtra teaches Marathi. France teaches French. Nobody calls that imposition. Imposition is forcing a non-native language on people, which is exactly what TN has historically resisted. Still, it left me with a genuine question: if Tamil became optional, will students still choose it consciously?

@0xThiru I dont think it has to be an identity vs. opportunity debate. You can have both. Learning Tamil preserves your connection to the society and culture you live in, while learning another language can improve your career opportunities.

@0xThiru If we leave everything to market demand, though, many regional languages will gradually disappear. Education is mainly about employment, but it's also about preparing people to be part of the society they live in by teaching its language, history, and culture.

@0xThiru if Tamil became optional, some students would still choose it because of their identity and culture, but many would naturally choose a language that offers better economic opportunities.
