In this divide, balanced and sustained coverage of humanitarian tragedies such as the Assam floods often ends up taking a back seat. The people affected deserve our undivided attention, irrespective of politics.

Public perception is often shaped less by isolated events than by the cumulative effect of how those events are handled. Allowing prolonged controversies, repeated protests, and high visibility campaigns by the opposition, whether over CJP-led activism, demonstrations outside the PM's residence, or issues such as the E20 fuel matter, inevitably creates a narrative vacuum that others are quick to fill. A timely course correction or even a Cabinet reshuffle before Parliament may have altered the optics. Those in government undoubtedly have access to more information than the public, but one lesson from 2004 remains timeless: once public perception crystallises, even the most impressive achievements can struggle to overcome it. I’m keyed into everything. I also know this government mishandled the first NEET debacle and the minister - though he put systems in place for the next exam that was conducted fairly (hope you followed that) - should’ve voluntarily quit. I also see the inability of the government to engage with the protestors and assuage feelings. These are governance failures. The escalation of this protest where non-NEET agendas are blatantly brought in is antithetical to the principle of the protest. To conflate a police reaction on site to violence, if if disproportionate to the stupidity of the students to a fear of “Emergency Rule”, is nothing short of fear mongering.
