The great Nari Contractor is 92 today. I remember compering an enchanting evening with him & Ted Dexter at the Eden Gardens a few years ago. Nari was recounting the tale of the Charlie Griffith bouncer in the West Indies that nearly killed him and how his life was saved by the team manager Ghulam Ahmed, who called in the local surgeon just in time when Nari was vomiting blood in a a bucket. Years later, when Nari had a fantastic domestic season and was on the verge of India selection again, Ghulam was the chairman of selectors. One evening, Ghulam came and met Nari and told him that he was certainly good enough to play for India again, but he would not pick him, because he could not bear the possibility of another life threatening injury to his dearest friend. When I asked Nari how he felt about that, he shrugged and said that it was difficult to argue with a man who had saved his life. Another time, another age... Incidentally, the Cricket Association of Bengal still hold an annual blood donation camp in the memory of Sir Frank Worrell, the opposing captain who was one of the first to donate blood to Nari Contractor!

Whatever happened to Acche Din and AmritKal. Dubai is not making you live for free, Golden Visa is for 10,400 AED, for 10 years. That money you’ve earned on Indian soil. Had the upper caste not committed atrocities there wouldn’t be any reservation. Stop giving excuses for selfish reasons.
