Impossible to overstate the importance of Jenni Murray to the movement of women that changed our politics, economy & our society; that changed our lives. She was the broadcasting wing of the women’s movement. We all owe her. RIP. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Virginia Woolf’s diary entries on James Joyce’s Ulysses: “An illiterate, underbred book it seems to me; the book of a self taught working man, and we all know how distressing they are, how egotistic, insistent, raw, striking, and ultimately nauseating. … I finished ‘Ulysses’ and think it is a misfire. Genius it has, I think; but of the inferior water. The book is diffuse. It is brackish. It is pretentious. It is underbred, not only in the obvious sense, but in the literary sense. A first-rate writer, I mean, respects writing too much to be tricky; startling; doing stunts.”

@simon_schama My father tapped out his journalism into the small hours on a typewriter and my mother used a sewing machine on our landing. When I got pins and needles as a child when slept, I dreamt I was being fed under the needle of a sewing machine. I never had a dream about typewriters.

@MarkSeddon1962 Often the folk who spout Judeo-Christian values have little knowledge of our places of worship nor of the value of the high quality art to be seen and heard in our great cathedrals. Then they ignore the message too of ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’

What we are witnessing here is a Trump style attempt to whip up hate and division, because that is all these people have to offer. All religions, and none, have gathered at Trafalgar Square and will continue to do so long after Farage & co have been tipped into the dustbin of history.
Nigel Farage MP@Nigel_Farage

What we witnessed in London at the historic Trafalgar Square, in a country built on Judeo-Christian values, was a group of people attempting dominance over our capital city and our culture. We are not going to surrender everything that was built over centuries and defended at great cost in two world wars for us to be a free, independent nation. The British people will not put up with this any longer — simple as.

@JohnSimpsonNews I wonder how long Israel dictating to the US expensive and ill judged military action will be tolerated.

Joe Kent, the US counterterrorism chief who resigned on Tuesday over Iran, makes a ferocious attack on Trump’s policy: “Israel drove the decision to take this action… We could have told the Israelis, ‘No you will not’”.

I don’t get it. If Hezbollah had flats in this block (unlikely in central Beirut but not impossible) why did the Israelis give everyone inside an hour to get out — including those they wanted to kill? And if there weren’t any Hezbollah people there, why destroy a building with dozens of civilians in it?
The Associated Press@AP

An Israeli airstrike struck an apartment building in central Beirut, on Wednesday. The Israeli army had warned residents to evacuate about an hour before completely flattening it as day broke.

@JohnSimpsonNews Netanyhu is wanted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court with arrest warrant issued 21/11/24 and alleged genocide too, so further death and destruction is hardly going to worry him. I assume he just does not care who he displaces and kills in Beirut.

@FrankRGardner A friend with signif. M.E. connections and involved in UK politics said over Gaza conflict 'They are all in it together... once in a room where a business man was selling X....to Hamas.' My friend frequently travels to Israel and M.E., Rusi links, knows leaders, diplomats etc.

@FrankRGardner The Iran conflict has exposed how UK navy and our defence is inadequate and how the EU only acts as individual countries when it comes to intervention in foreign conflicts. Also Arab nations starting to realise they have common needs of defence and protecting people and assets.

@Kevin_Maguire @PierceVsMaguire I'm fast thinking the British have a growing strand of isolationism and prejudice. Reform might well win GE in 2029 so that will be the new form of being British. The cruel party in power due to the electorate being 'British.'

Forcing people building new lives in Britain to wait much longer before they are given security is cruel, unfair and counter-productive but is it really, as Angela Rayner says, "unBritish"? @PierceVsMaguire youtu.be/_DI9JRISpaI?si…

@ajmandal15 @BretVDB The antisemitism and snobbishness grates with me too. As to closet fascist many rich folk who could afford to travel dropped in to see the spectacle of Nazi rallies. We have MAGA rallies, Meloni rallies and even Reform protests outside hotels. Choose a divisive and cruel rally.

@ajmandal15 @BretVDB Many were in the 1920s. Even Graham Greene later regretted his Jewish stereotype of Colleoni in Brighton Rock of 1938. And as we know antisemitism has been in recent politics and whipped up in street protests flourishing at universities too in 2026! Snobbishness e.g. publishing.
