Slightly surprised by this in a 1939 newspaper article by Clarence L. Pemberton: “To make an effort to write a history of Caswell [County, NC] without mentioning the negroes and the part played by them would be rank injustice.” No mention of Moses Roper, though.

She brought her family to the other side of the world under totally false pretenses. Her choosing a life of comfort (while simultaneously preventing her little brother from experiencing the same sense of solace she experienced) made perfect sense for her storyline, IMO.
