Even if revenue numbers are better than expected, the STRUCTURAL deficit will remain -- the state is not raising enough revenue to cover its investments, and those costs continue to rise. One year can be patched over. But next year always arrives. More revenue is still needed!
Shlomo Schorr@OneJerseySchorr

As the New Jersey Legislature continues to hold departmental hearings over the proposed state budget for Fiscal Year 2027, @johnsb01 reports that final revenue numbers, which will come out next week, are expected to be "promising," which could give Governor Sherrill and legislative leaders more flexibility in their negotiations.

Many New Jerseyans on food stamps could see their monthly payments reduced, and approximately 47,000 could lose benefits entirely, under new federal guidelines that may also shift hundreds of millions of dollars in program cost to state taxpayers. When the big moneyed interests shill for big sports or entertainment events, they always say it'll be an economic boon and have rosy economic projections But they ignore that these events have costs on local residents that cancel out much of the economic benefit!

Both FIFA and the Murphy administration walked back the “free” public transportation requirement in 2024 — when @northjersey was the only one reporting on this and had the contracts and addenda. LINK: northjersey.com/story/sports/m… Let this also be a PSA to support local news

FIFA have responded to this - and strongly. “We are quite surprised by the NJ Governor’s approach today on fan transportation. The original FIFA World Cup 2026 Host City Agreements signed in 2018 required free transportation for fans to all matches. Recognizing the financial strain this placed on the host cities, back in 2023 FIFA adjusted the Host Agreement requirements across all host cities as follows: All Match Ticket holders and accredited individuals shall be able to access transport (public or additionally planned transport) at cost to allow travel to Stadiums on match days.   “FIFA worked for years with host cities on transportation and mobility plans, including advocating for millions of dollars in federal funding to support host cities for transportation.   “FIFA World Cup will bring millions of fans to North America along with related economic impact. Many fans will travel to NYNJ to enjoy the eight matches scheduled. FIFA is not aware of any other major event previously held at NYNJ Stadium, including other major sports, global concert tours, etc., where organizers were required to pay for fan transportation.”

ICE does not readily share data on what they do and where they do it. In #NJ, most of those they arrest have no criminal record. Our analysis of #ICE arrests exposes the gap between rhetoric and reality in the administration's immigration crackdown nj.com/politics/2026/…

Call it a loophole or don't. The fact is the ABC deduction: - grew much faster than other deductions - grew faster than the real-world business environment would suggest - is used predominantly by very-high-income-earners

The total ABC deduction costs the state $193M for FY27 The amount the ABC reform saves is ~$120M for FY27 Keep in mind those earning $500k-$1M still get to keep half the deduction! This means **the vast majority of this deduction was captured by the top 1% in incomes.**

One weird thing about the business lobby response to @GovSherrillNJ proposal to rein in Alternative Business Calculation deductions is insistence that it's "not a loophole." I don't care what you call it but it's tax code that the wealthy have exploited to reduce their taxes
