The Arcane Texas Fact of the Day: It was 54 years ago today, on March 9, 1972, that citizens of Lubbock voted to allow the sale of beer and liquor by the drink at establishments within the city limits, putting an end to its claim as the largest dry city in the United States. However, with bottled alcoholic beverages not available within the city limits, "The Strip" developed at the edge of town in the years following. One reader told me that she loved going to The Strip with her dad when she was a young girl because it was like a "mini Las Vegas, with all the lights they had. It was kind of exciting for a youngster in Lubbock." Looking at this photo, which is courtesy the @LAJ_Photo , I can see that. Any of y'all have any memories?

JUST IN: Legendary football coach Lou Holtz has passed away at the age of 89. Holtz led Notre Dame to an undefeated season and national championship in 1988. He was put in hospice care earlier this year. “Among his many accomplishments, we will remember him above all as a teacher, leader and mentor who brought out the very best in his players, on and off the field, earning their respect and admiration for a lifetime…” University of Notre Dame President Rev. Robert A. Dowd said. “Whenever Notre Dame called to ask for his help, Lou answered with his characteristic generosity, and he will be sorely missed.” “The prayers of the entire Notre Dame community are with his family and many friends in this time of sorrow. May he rest in the peace and love of Christ.”
