@jdcmedlock @freedaaron I think that it's hilarious that the biggest meritocracy supporters, real "self made man" types, are also against estate taxes. What did your heirs do to deserve your money? They should have to *earn* it all!

@freedaaron Yea, the estate tax is really more like an estate tax break relative to normal income taxation

Unlike previous oil wars renewable energy is now available at scale. It's distributed, diversified and resilient. Most importantly, solar panels don’t blow up and once they are in place you don’t need ships to constantly feed them to make energy. The sun is looking like a pretty stable energy source right about now. 2/2

for years, society was limited to only 16 syrup squares per waffle but with recent combinatorial optimization breakthroughs our research department has achieved previously unheard of densities of waffle syrup

Why do so many young people in the US use "on accident" instead of "by accident" to describe something they did inadvertently? I had never heard it before moving here, now I hear it all the time.

@TheAdamZone @dieworkwear It was. King James commissioned Shakespeare to write it. Wasn't her best work, to be quite honest.

@PretendEditor I literally laughed out loud at this: "The first thing China will do is terminate ALL Ice Hockey being played in Canada, and permanently eliminate The Stanley Cup."

Commentary Donald J. Trump Posts From Truth Social@TrumpDailyPosts

Donald J. Trump Truth Social Post 05:43 PM EST 02.09.26 As everyone knows, the Country of Canada has treated the United States very unfairly for decades. Now, things are turning around for the U.S.A., and FAST! But imagine, Canada is building a massive bridge between Ontario and Michigan. They own both the Canada and the United States side and, of course, built it with virtually no U.S. content. President Barack Hussein Obama stupidly gave them a waiver so they could get around the BUY AMERICAN Act, and not use any American products, including our Steel. Now, the Canadian Government expects me, as President of the United States, to PERMIT them to just “take advantage of America!” What does the United States of America get — Absolutely NOTHING! Ontario won't even put U.S. spirits, beverages, and other alcoholic products, on their shelves, they are absolutely prohibited from doing so and now, on top of everything else, Prime Minister Carney wants to make a deal with China — which will eat Canada alive. We’ll just get the leftovers! I don't think so. The first thing China will do is terminate ALL Ice Hockey being played in Canada, and permanently eliminate The Stanley Cup. The Tariffs Canada charges us for our Dairy products have, for many years, been unacceptable, putting our Farmers at great financial risk. I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them, and also, importantly, Canada treats the United States with the Fairness and Respect that we deserve. We will start negotiations, IMMEDIATELY. With all that we have given them, we should own, perhaps, at least one half of this asset. The revenues generated because of the U.S. Market will be astronomical. Thank you for your attention to this matter! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP

@bruces "Even Canada—Canada!—has a better international reputation" What the heck? Canada has always had a great international reputation! Texan backpackers have been sewing Canadian flags on their backpacks for at least 35 years, probably longer.

If you are a software engineer "experiencing some degree of mental health crisis", now hear this, because I've been coding for 50 years since the days of punched cards and I have a salutary kick in your ass to deliver. Get over yourself. Every previous "programming is obsolete" panic has been a bust, and this one's going to be too. The fundamental problem of mismatch between the intentions in human minds and the specifications that a computer can interpret hasn't gone away just because now you can do a lot of your programming in natural language to an LLM. Systems are still complicated. This shit is still difficult. The need for people who specialize in bridging that gap isn't going to go away. As usual, the answer is: upskill yourself and adapt. If a crusty old fart like me can do it, you can too.
Tom Dale@tomdale

I don't know why this week became the tipping point, but nearly every software engineer I've talked to is experiencing some degree of mental health crisis.

Over 400 years ago, Galileo Galilei hypothesized that mass does not affect the rate at which an object falls. Today, using the world’s largest vacuum chamber at NASA, we can confirm this fundamental principle of physics.
