Delighted to announce that my first book, The Tartar Moment: Crises and the Globalization of Chinese Knowledges in Early Modern Europe, is under advance contract with @UChicagoPress! It argues that the Manchu conquest made China matter immensely to Europeans in times of crisis

Some people argue that Africans should "move on" and stop whining about colonialism... Tanzanian professor Issa Shivji notes: "The contemporary neo-liberal discourse has one fundamental blind spot. It treats the present as if the present has had no history" Prof Sylvia Tamale

Talking about archives later today with Amy Rommelspacher and @DrDaries. We’re young, we’re fun, and we like thinking about and using dusty old records, come find out why!

Dorcas' Didi' Lekganyane, 32, was stabbed multiple times allegedly by her partner in their home in Bramley, Johannesburg, on 11 July 2024. It is alleged that police responded to a domestic violence incident when they found Didi with multiple stabbing wounds. Her partner was also in their home, allegedly trying to commit suicide after murdering Didi. He was taken to the hospital, where he was placed under police guard. Police confirmed that as soon as he can appear in court, he will be charged with murder. Didi was an academic and internationally respected scientist. In June 2024, she was announced as one of the @mailandguardian 200 Young South Africans in the "Climate Change & Environment" category, celebrating her important work and passion. Fly high, Sister. #womenforchange #sayhername #JusticeforDidiLekganyane #justicefordidi

I have always emphasized the significance of Patrica Hill-Collins' work when I teach about what “intersectionality” is. Because without an understanding of what Hill-Collins refers to as the matrix of domination, intersectionality is easily misunderstood as an issue of identities & not an issue of power. Crenshaw is a legal scholar who coined the term & provided a legal analysis of how the interplay of these systems of domination differentially affected Black women workers in the Settler US. What we now call intersectionality had other names (I.E. ”triple jeopardy” OR ”triple oppression”) & was theorized by a number of Black scholars such as Frederick Douglas & W.E.B. Du Bois.
Jairo I. Fúnez-Flores@Jairo_I_Funez

INTERSECTIONALITY without a critique of imperialism, colonial dispossession, and genocide is COMPLICITY.

Winter's chill is only charming if you're warm enough to enjoy it. Loving winter is a luxury most people in our country don’t have.

‘Awaking on Friday morning, June 20, 1913, the South African Native found himself, not actually a slave, but a pariah in the land of his birth.’ Three years after the formation of the Union of SA, the Natives Land Act of 1913 was passed this day in 1913 and was repealed in 1991.
