The Saha equation ✍️
It developed by Indian scientist Meghnad Saha in 1920, is a straightforward rule that explains why stars with different temperatures display distinct patterns in their light spectra. In a star's hot atmosphere, atoms can lose electrons and become ions, particularly when the temperature is sufficiently high. The hotter the gas, the more atoms become ionized, while fewer remain neutral. Cooler gas keeps most atoms neutral. This transition occurs quickly because it requires a lot of energy to remove electrons, so a small increase in temperature can change many atoms from neutral to ionized. The level of ionization also slightly depends on how crowded the gas is; denser gas with more free electrons tends to maintain more neutral atoms. Before Saha's work, people believed that stars with different spectra contained very different chemicals. Saha demonstrated that most stars are composed of similar materials, mainly hydrogen and helium. The major differences observed in their light are due to temperature determining which atoms are neutral and which are ionized. This idea transformed the star classification system (O B A F G K M) into a clear temperature order and laid the groundwork for modern astrophysics.
