If the argument is that professors should be open to viewpoint diversity within the classroom and among students, I agree.
I don't believe in shoving personal opinions on students, and I tell them that the first day: "This isn't Dr. Gill's Opinions Class."

We focus too much on what viewpoint diversity means in terms of the *professors'* viewpoints. As an educator, my job is to make my classroom a place where students can explore their own viewpoints, and others' viewpoints, rigorously and openly. If I give off a vibe that only certain viewpoints are acceptable, or if my INSTITUTION gives off that vibe, then we are not doing our job as educators. And I can guarantee that right now, the 1/3 or so of students who hold "conservative" religious perspectives on a range of issues absolutely do not feel comfortable talking openly about them in most classrooms.

Anti-con discrimination in academia is real. Part of it is a self-selection problem in the pipeline (ie "I have better things to do with my time than deal with a hostile grad program,") but part is also surely active discrimination in hiring, grad admissions, publication. 1/

- What role does culture play in the different rates of violence and criminality play between different demographics, as opposed to irrational discrimination.
- How do welfare policies perform at helping people in bad situations, and how much do they lead to the creation of bad situations?
- How should we respond to terrorism?
- What should the distribution of taxes look like? Who should be taxed, in what situations, and how much?

everyone is being very defensive for obvious reasons but he is correct. academics with noxious right wing views are less likely to get hired. personally I just don't give a shit. the university is not a place of pure neutrality and never has been.
