@ErasmusBHarry @jazzfan71 @ragandboneshop yeah idk where he got that factoid from because every single expert on earth seems to agree that humans produce about 60x more co2 than volcanoes do

this is going to sound mean but the majority of the conservative positions TAH laments not seeing in academe are village idiot positions: “foreigner bad,” “boys are the ones with the weewee,” etc. not sure how ancient prejudices would even generate scholarship?

@jazzfan71 @ragandboneshop I’m not even going to try to explain biologists’ views of gender to you. Your claim about volcanoes is also provably false: “Human activities emit 60 or more times the amount of carbon dioxide released by volcanoes each year.” climate.gov/news-features/…

@ratrhmu @ragandboneshop Gender is binary. That is the only way humans reproduce. Volcanoes produce more emissions than all of humanity. Please learn basic science.

@RaspyLegs @MoodyBlueliner @kayteterry you’re citing a paper by Steven Andrew Jacobs that has been debunked about 100x over lmfao… and even then, in that study, about 80% of biologists polled were still pro-choice.

@NullArcana @pissvortex this is why non-academics shouldn’t weigh into academic convo bc so many studies over the past several decades show that gender is not binary but you guys keep harping on a way of thinking that is archaic at best

@MattLutzPhi idk man i personally wouldn’t want someone who sees our current climate issues are merely “natural phenomena” (something overtly and consistently disproven) to be amongst experts in the field. can you imagine how badly they’d drag us down?

I don't know how you think our understanding of the world could be negatively impacted by refusing to hire conservatives! After all, what could we possibly have to learn from a bunch of people who think [an insane strawman of conservative thought]?

all this viewpoint diversity in academia bullshit is really tiresome when you consider the fact that conservative 'intellectuals' have benefitted from a half century long affirmative action program called 'billionaire-funded think tanks' lol

@ProfBZZZ that’s my point. being committed to truth is inherently oppositional to political conservatism in the united states, which was the original point being made. you don’t even have a dog in this fight because you aren’t a part of the american academic landscape.

Here I was thinking I was in a profession committed to truth, wisdom, and ideas... ... But apparently I joined a cult of perminamt revolution. Not sure why the public ever funded is then. Might explain their dubiousness now. Yowza.
rat@ratrhmu

@sfmcguire79 @timgill924 conservatism is inherently based around maintaining a status quo (“traditionalism”). this is oppositional to the act of being an academic.

More racial prejudice out of academia. Both authors of the paper are employed at public universities in the UK.

@timgill924 right! i teach rhetoric have given plenty of conservative students very high grades because their work is well-written and although their ideas are incorrect (imo) they argued them well enough for their knowledge-level. conservatives wish they were oppressed but they aren’t

@VelmaDykely right! conservatives aren’t underrepresented in academia bc they’re discriminated against. it’s because their views are easy to prove wrong. like hmmm i wonder why this guy, who thinks climate change as we’re facing it is “natural”, wouldn’t thrive in academia

academics arent left leaning because of anticonservative discrimination or because of any particular affinity academic work has with 'leftist' personality traits or values. Its just a reflection of educated professionals in general being center left

@timgill924 Conservatives and/or Republicans. People interested in neglected areas of study. People with heterodox views in popular areas of study. People who will take concerns about the lack of viewpoint diversity seriously. Here are some helpful thoughts: musaalgharbi.substack.com/p/on-inequalit…

@AndroidNeera right lmao like conservatives think they don’t do well in academia because they’re oppressed. in reality it’s because they literally don’t believe in climate change which is a fundamentally and quantifiably incorrect viewpoint

@DearLeftyFriend @DiRico_Rants also they aren’t even good research questions because you’re inserting your opinion into them to begin with (ex. phrasing such as “irrational”). maybe sit this one out considering you can’t even read or respond to op’s post correctly 😭

Sure, here are a few: - What role does culture play in the different rates of violence and criminality play between different demographics, as opposed to irrational discrimination. - How do welfare policies perform at helping people in bad situations, and how much do they lead to the creation of bad situations? - How should we respond to terrorism? - What should the distribution of taxes look like? Who should be taxed, in what situations, and how much?

“noxious right wing views” such as: - the male/female binary - genetics - policing and incarceration - the benefits of capitalism - climate change as natural phenomena - being a Christian who attends church & believes the Bible
Jan@janhopi

everyone is being very defensive for obvious reasons but he is correct. academics with noxious right wing views are less likely to get hired. personally I just don't give a shit. the university is not a place of pure neutrality and never has been.
