OK, in the paper, the data was: Faces 1-3: 100>97% scored "male" Faces 5-7: 94>100% scored "female" Face 4 was the transition face, with 68% scoring it "male". FTR, I didn't hesitate on 4/male then 5/female.

This is a computer-generated series, transitioning between "hyper male" and "hyper female". Where does your perception of the sex of the person shift? Which face is the most ambiguous? If you reply, please include your sex (the actual one).

@TheMathsBazaar We have 31 in one group, and a very worrying 33 in the FM group

However, grade 6 students rarely finish the maths course (none of this year’s 87 finishers started on a 6) and I spend a lot of time making likely outcomes very clear to those who want to start.

@missradders Yes, we let parents know sets before the summer holiday. Still loads of contact from parents, but it’s easier to deal with in July than September as I have gained time 😁

Heads of Maths: do you formally write to parents to confirm their sets for the following academic year in July. We don’t do any kind of formal communication other than to pupils. Wondering if it will cut down on September phone calls?

Students with a gcse 6 can get an A level grade but it depends whether they will be ok with a lower grade. Most don't set out to get an E but this is the best most 6s will get. Obv there are exceptions

@MathsImpact We use OneNote using the class notebook from Teams so that class notes just live in Team where students can access them from home.

OneNote is brilliant. It's not a gimmick, it's just a much better way of doing the teaching you're used to doing.

@MathsImpact I am in this camp - Desmos on their phone is far better at everything than a graphical calculator (and I use autograph / geogebra / Desmos a huge amount when teaching). The only marks I ever worry about them dropping is if FM are asked to sketch a polar curve 😬

Don't bother: Then where is the tech in your classroom? How do you explore graphical representations efficiently? Is it detrimental to exam results (even by a couple of marks) not having one?

Well these are certainly very split results. I wonder how many schools have reflected on their strategy for using tech in A-level maths. I see a number of problems with each answer, and I'm not really sure which one is the right direction of travel...

Honestly just had the loveliest department meeting. Lots of maths talk, lots of laughter and another debate about whether a cylinder is a prism. Needed that.. ❤️😊

I have been increasingly experimenting with call and response for key little reminders. Things like "algebraic fractions? Don't think, factorise" and "Histograms? Frequency is area". Anyone got any suggestions for key reminders?

@MissFolorunsho Work review - this year I am doing these in dept meetings and purpose is to generate discussion and share best practice. It has produced some interesting conversations - staff have been much less resistant than I feared…

I hate the term book ‘scruitiny.’ Scrutiny just sounds negative to me 🤷🏾‍♀️ What do you call them instead?

@MrMathsTeacher @Arithmaticks Ah! Same as mine, then. In my room if I switch the board on before opening the app, it doesn’t pick up the touchscreen input. I have to reboot the app with the board switched on and then I can scroll etc with my hand… not sure if that helps 😁

@MrMathsTeacher @Arithmaticks Are you writing on an IWB? If I have just turned the board on I always have to reboot the OneNote app to make the pen/draw work properly 🤷🏻‍♀️

@blatherwick_sam We have historically set questions from Pearson textbooks, expected students to check with answers in back and then collected to check completion and review for misconceptions. Really struggling as solution banks freely available - looking for other low marking time options…

A-level maths teachers What's your homework marking strategy? How much detail do you go into? What are you checking for? Appreciate vagueness of questions but as much detail as possible appreciated (Sorry to be grumpy, but not interested in "I don't mark" replies)

@maths_clarkey Yup - five hours a fortnight for two years. We do FM1 and FM2. Usually ends up with quite a small cohort, but they do well and it does wonders for their maths grade 😁

@Whitehughes @Ridermeister That’s fair. It does seem odd to me that students were expected to put together those two fundamental ideas whilst sitting in the exam - would much rather teach it and develop the idea, as it’s such a great application!
