@exQUIZitely Yeah, that game was a major time sink for me on the Amiga 500. Loved watching the intro, set the mood for the gameplay that followed.

Dungeon Master paved the way for real-time dungeon crawlers, and Eye of the Beholder turned it into a highway. Eye of the Beholder II: The Legend of Darkmoon turned 35 this year, and the intro alone still gives me nerd-chills. Absolute timeless classic.

That intro really fired up the imagination back in 1998, didn't it? That is how began one of the best virtual adventures we could ever experience. Funny. I’ve never created a character other than a warrior or paladin. Baldur’s Gate (1998, Windows)

@oldyzach Me too. Glad I backed this on Kickstarter. It has its bugs, but still fun. I also enjoy loading and playing the remastered Wasteland.

Although, like many of you, I prefer the timeless original from the Amiga, I still enjoy jumping into a mission or two in Wings! Remastered Edition.

My nephew was digging through the shelves in my gaming room and asked where I kept the "older games I played when I was his age" (he’s 15 now). I pointed him to the early 80s section. As expected, he didn’t recognize a single title (which definitely made me feel old) but for some reason, Lode Runner caught his eye. I told him it wasn’t exactly a “pretty” game in terms of graphics or sound, but that it was one of my all-time favorites back in the day. We fired it up, I gave him a quick two-minute tutorial, and before we knew it, we’d been playing for nearly three hours. I felt genuinely grateful and a bit sentimental. Faith in humanity restored, if you will. These old games, with all their limitations in graphics and sound, can still completely captivate a new generation. Lode Runner (Brøderbund, 1983), thank you for still kicking ass over four decades later.

Is Gunship 2000 the best helicopter combat simulation of all time? It's 35 years old now, so I guess the answer is no, but honestly, I’ve never come across a better one. Have you? It had a very steep learning curve, massive manual (in typical MicroProse fashion), and truly excellent gameplay. If you invested enough time in it, it would reward you a hundredfold. You command up to five helicopters including the AH-64 Apache, Longbow, Blackhawk, Comanche, and MD-500 Defender. Campaigns are set in the Persian Gulf and Central Europe, with expansions adding Antarctica and the Philippines. Honourable mention to the officer in the back playing Gunship 2000 in a Gunship 2000 game. Love all those little Easter eggs in older games.

Spent the late afternoon creating characters for our AD&D 2e Forgotten Realms campaign. The (initial) core group has a dwarf thief, elf fighter, and human mage. There will also be a human cleric and possibly a human ranger joining them. ⚔️ #DnD #ttrpg

It's better to burn out than to fade away... Wings (1990) was Cinemaware’s last game, and maybe their best. I know some people would pick Defender of the Crown or It Came from the Desert, but for me, Wings stood out with its great graphics, music, design, and overall feeling of immersion. The career mode and mission briefings felt like you were in an old war movie. It was also really tough, especially the dogfights. The sound effects when your plane was hit by bullets always let your heart sink a little. Cinemaware didn’t last very long, and I’ve always wondered why a studio that made so many good games couldn’t keep going. Sure, piracy was a big problem in the 80s and 90s, and that hurt everyone, not just them. Still, it’s a shame they only laste from 1986 to 1991.

My very first PC game and the reason why my switch from Amiga to PC was made easy: Civilization (1991) I had an Amiga for 5 years but often played PC games at my friend's house. Most of them felt inferior to Amiga games (prior to 1990) but then things started to change: Wing Commander, Dune 2, Civilization, and more were released. And yes, they were also all still available for the Amiga too, but I never had a hard drive for it and also not a second disk drive. The constant disk juggling was a real chore - and seeing that games became bigger and bigger (meaning more and more disks), the switch became inevitable. Once I had a PC, the first game I bought (yes, I actually bought it fair and square) was Civilization. I still have it today, the good old MicroProse massive box and manual, in all its beauty, 35 years later. Do you remember your first PC game?
