@vaxryy Getting a work visa in other nations is pretty difficult, no? I don’t think I could just waltz over to Europe as an American even with some work experience. Maybe I’m wrong. Particularly not the USA, immigration here is a lottery system to a degree IIRC.

what puzzles me here is if your situation is that bad, you're getting 3h of sleep a night, you're overworked, working till death basically... does the thought of saving up a bit of money to emigrate not cross your mind at all? The Japanese passport is extremely powerful - emigrating to Europe or the US shouldn't be that hard, right? You save for a single one-way plane ticket, three or four months of rent, and you should be good. Changing jobs is not seen as a negative in the west, so there is no problem with that. I fail to understand here.

@emmma_camp_ It is strange because older family didn't have those restrictions but nobody intervened. Strange given crime is better now than the past. Really sucks for kids these days too. The internet is not as creative or stimulating a place as it was as I grew up.

I know how people (including me) write a lot about how messed up Gen Z is, but things seem so much worse for Gen Alpha. Almost half of 7-year-olds aren't allowed to play in their own yards??

@amphichrome_ I swear by a Mac too. Tried to use Linux and Framework 16, and got tired of bugs causing force reboots. macOS visually looks kind of janky these days, but it's still the most stable desktop I've used. kosmickrisp makes it viable for learning Vulkan which is cool.

@amphichrome_ Android feels more stable on some pieces of the core system experience, but many apps by contrast feel less polished. iOS 26 is fairly rough. I do think Gemini is a real advantage on Android and part of why I switched. Much better than Siri.

@valhalla_dev I have (ex) friends who studied engineering in uni, but have gotten so polarized by the radical politics there that their understanding of technology is collapsed into undirected fury at companies. I regret not studying overseas to be honest. I hope other places are immune.

Yeah so this is the Butlerian Left, they've taken over pretty much the entirety of the US progressive left (at minimum, don't know much about their sway in Europe or Asian leftist movements) and the realization that they've completely brainwormed the left has lead me to doomerism followed by acceptance that there is absolutely 0 broad social movement out there that has any chance of countering the US far right in the near term. They are completely and unsparingly ignorant about not just AI or fancy new stuff but just the basics of how the internet and technology works. You can see it in the replies to Taylor's tweets. Like zero foundational understanding of how any of this stuff works, and these are the people hounding AOC, Bernie, etc. into taking braindead stances on AI and datacenters. This isn't me being like "yeah so that's why I'm on the right now" it's an extremely frustrated admission that I and a ton of other progressive engineers are incredibly politically homeless because the progressive political movement is made up of extremely online people who don't know how to print a PDF but want the power to erase technological progress from the globe.

@StatisticUrban In my experience the other ways are often seen as creepy or no longer ethical. Feels to me like people want to date explicitly to date, and see it as necessarily distinct from other parts of life.

these days are just so different. kinda really tired from work. people are super fucking tense, I've gotten scared. very hard to see people. yet I also just feel badly drained and know I'm not doing a great job even for who I do know.

man, I feel like career wise I am OK, and yet like personally? things have been so weird since leaving high school. miss so many people. getting older I've grown real inward.
