Big news in my corner of the mapping world: @Mapbox GL JS now natively supports @protomaps PMTiles. Shown here: 146 million US jobs, packaged as PMTiles by my {freestiler} tool, visualized on Mapbox's stunning dark-theme 3D Standard style.

Time lapse of the early development of the Kankakee Supercell. This was as it moved past Pontiac and dropped a brief tornado. #illinois #ilwx

@moultano People can easily make music on a computer now. That’s my theory.

I wonder how much the decline of rock music is a side effect of the switch from FM radio to headphones as the main mode of listening. You need the whole spectrum of a distorted guitar to cut through the road noise and the transmission loss. Headphones need more delicate sounds.

Distributed energy is harder to map than centralized infrastructure, but cutting-edge AI tools can help. Shown: identifying rooftop solar panels in a suburban neighborhood with @Mapbox imagery, @Meta's SAM3. Useful for utilities, grid planners, and solar prospecting.

@AlexTran677026 I don’t know why everybody is so obsessed with this movie. I thought the explosion was terrible. You can’t fake a nuclear explosion. There is so much stock footage they could’ve used.

Did you know in *Oppenheimer*, the Trinity test explosion lights up the New Mexico desert at 5:29 AM—Nolan recreated the 19-kiloton blast with zero CGI, using 100+ gasoline fireballs and aluminum powder for that silent-then-deafening shockwave? Cillian Murphy held his breath for 45 seconds to capture Oppie’s stunned “Now I am become Death” gaze, filmed in IMAX at 48 fps for visceral dread. Fun fact: The mushroom cloud rose 40,000 feet in real-time—crew felt the heat 10 miles away! 🎬 (Oppenheimer 2023)

@spann It’s not that we feel like we Have to worry about the models, it’s because information like that is widely accessible now and people enjoy not relying on 10 ppl to tell them what’s going to happen in their area. You have to admit though, the 12z AND 18z? I like my chances more!

ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM: Social platforms are lightning up with snow talk again for the weekend. I have attached three global models, valid Sunday morning at 3a CT. What is spreading now is the output from the American GFS model, which suggests a chance of meaningful snow for the southern 2/3 of Alabama this weekend thanks to a frontal wave in the northern Gulf. A few notes… *The GFS has a poor track record when it comes to events like this in the cold season at this latitude. *The reliable European global model, which I used to base my forecast, shows nothing more than sprinkles or flurries. *The Canadian global model shows nothing at all. I really don’t know why snow evokes such strong emotion, but it has always been that way. Keyboard brawls have erupted all over the place today. I don’t like being a “model poster”, anyone can find this on their own. It is my job to understand the various biases, and make a public forecast. You shouldn’t have to worry about GFS, EC, GEFS, EPS, GEM, JMA, NAM, HRRR, etc. That is what I do. Predicting the future is hard, and any forecast can change. But for now the GFS solution is rejected. Of course, we will watch trends closely. We can say for sure it will be very cold across Alabama tomorrow, and then again Sunday and Monday.

I have a couple Ring doorbells. Bad decision, years ago. If I don't want to get addicted to Unifi, what's the best PoE video doorbell I can integrate with Home Assistant and/or Frigate?
