Certain grammatical rules never appear in any known language. By constructing artificial languages that have these rules, linguists can use neural networks to explore how people learn.

#Sindhi and #Saraiki speakers, do any of you live in England, preferably within a 60 mi radius of Oxford, or know someone who does? I have a phonetician friend at Oxford who wants to work on implosives in your 🫵 lovely language. They’ll pay for your commute, &c. #سنڌي #سرائیکی

@raezeerr Honestly I would just love it if more fantasy writers (that aren’t writing a globalized world) played with the concept of different cultures & parts of the world having different perceptions of gender

yall need to understand that its EXTREMELY difficult to write and create a fictional society and world where gender isn't a thing when human society is so dependent on gender.

“The function, the very serious function of racism is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work. It keeps you explaining, over and over again, your reason for being. Somebody says you have no language and you spend twenty years proving that you do. Somebody says your head isn’t shaped properly so you have scientists working on the fact that it is. Somebody says you have no art, so you dredge that up. Somebody says you have no kingdoms, so you dredge that up. None of this is necessary. There will always be one more thing.” ― Toni Morrison

@avzaagzonunaada It’s also interesting to note folk transparency. Like, my family considers my brother’s name to be transparently “from the heart” (superficially হৃদয় থেকে > current simplified spelling ঋত্তিক) but it’s not actually from that

Hindi names are transparent? Persian names? I think there are two very different things being conflated here. Many “Hindi names” are transparent in Sanskrit, not in Hindi. The meanings of these names are known only by tradition, not by synchronic interpretation by native ...
Benjamin Wolf 🇺🇦@benbawan

You can call it transparency – so if a name has a understandable meaning in the respective language. And there are indeed huge differences, with Asian and African given names most directly intelligible, Middle Eastern ones in the middle, and European ones most opaque.

my hot take is that the inconsistency between blocksets is not a problem at all and it is good that blocksets are often unique ...with some exceptions, like the missing walls are so weird, and andesite/granite/diorite should have bricks
