@mbockcote Quebecers are like panda bears, they are too stupid to live on their own and must be forced to survive otherwise they become extinct because their culture has run its course. Let them disappear into history!

@LeaVerou @overleaf Have you tried with Obsidian? You can make your own extension in JS. If you use Zotero for annotating, there’s a read-only sync Obsidian community plugin. You can edit on iOS, Android, Desktop and sync on Git repos.

The ergonomics of Markdown for academic writing are *so* much better, but damn the collaboration story needs work. Collaboration with LaTeX: You use @overleaf, a realtime collaborative editor. You can collaborate on any files in your repo and sync to GitHub whenever. It shows the LaTeX source and the rendered PDF side by side, with two-way scroll syncing. Collaboration with Markdown: 1. You use a realtime collaborative editor like HackMD, Stackbit, etc? Enjoy having all your citations, footnotes, cross-references etc be rendered as unrecognized garbage because they are not supported in the editor’s hardcoded flavor of MD and there’s no extensibility. 2. You use a headless CMS? Hahaha nice try. They’re all designed around connecting template data to JSON files. 3. You use @code? You can at least add custom styles, markdown-it plugins, and even custom post-processing scripts and bring it close to the real rendering with a lot of work, but if you want realtime collab your only option is Live Share. There’s no realtime collab that falls back to async collab if you’re not online. You have to commit to either full async or full sync before you can collaborate. Am I missing some options, or is the situation really that dire?

@stubbornella Oh. And they’re looking for packaging python, I assume. What are they looking at packaging for, to run into? So many possibilities. I know you said run in Windows (PowerShell, or WSL?) but probably writing logic that can run also in non Windows CLI, I assume?

8yo is trying to code a package manager but finding shell commands on windows unpredictable. Is there a good way for them to learn about OS differences?

@stubbornella Is he using TypeScript for it? (Which language?) If it’s TypeScript, the rushjs.io team, led by Microsoft, has done a great job at making CLI stuff related to packaging running on Linux & Windows. They’ve nailed how to release large collection pkg w/ release group

@wolsned @StanceNBalance Wait for reading Orwell’s 1984 where everyone has “tele screen” watching them (“Big Brother”), where meaning of words are changed and whole new vocabulary “Newspeak” published by the Ministry of Truth (“Minitrue”)

@John_Papa @MikeRyanDev @web_rush @ag_grid @IdeaBlade “Site reliability”, you’re not talking about SRE (Site Reliability Engineering); where SITE means: Stitch In Time Engineering. The reliability of complex distributed systems. Is this what you’re talking about? Or it’s *Web site*’s reliability?

Oh. Nice. (NOT). Now when reading and scrolling on a thread, it cleans the screen and rebuild the boxes to let you continue reading. Interrupted. I’ll get back off this.

@fharper @canadapostcorp It's not like they can't test their own systems. And not like it's characters from a language that's not in our constitution

Seriously @canadapostcorp... I'm used to that, but a Canadian government entity should definitely do better, especially in Québec! It's not like UTF-8 encoding exist since the 90s.. oh wait, it does. It's not just the card, letters & stuff... it's your system... ffs

Cisco to buy Splunk for $28bn. Something's not right about this. Let me think out loud here. First Splunk is a logging tool. And they are great at it. Always been a shining star in what they do. Their tool was better at all the competitors right away and they knew it. They've also been super involved with the community. Many of my shirts and dinners have been courtesy of Splunk. I asked their leadership back in 2010, how have you not been acquired yet? Your company rocks. He said, that's not what their goal is. They want to be the next leader, not be picked up by one. Soon after that they IPO'd. Then they started acquiring company after company. I think they acquired 10 companies now? And have given over $100M to charity. Surely they must have had many very exciting offers to be acquired. But firmly were saying no to them all. Because that's not what they wanted to do. In 2019 their valuation was $35 billion. With no slow down in sight (til pandemic hit). Last year their revenue was $3bn. They are absolutely not needing money. They are earning it hand over fist. Now Cisco comes and offers them $28bn and they take it? I don't get it. And we are all sad to see this because Cisco stopped innovating decades ago and just acquires companies to stay fresh then does nothing with them. So this is the peak for Splunk. That's it. And I was rooting for them to do so much more. My guess is that the original leadership of the company changed. The ethos changed. The drive, the passion, the excitement ran out among leadership. They don't need money, they don't need this "partnership". I think what they needed was a sabbatical. Recover from the burnout or whatever it was they needed to replenish their energy to get back in the game and make a ruckus.

@brad_frost I was wondering if showing other things that doesn't have do much marketing be appreciated or rejected. I have a little boy, not a toddler yet, and I'll try to introduce him The Smurfs is one. I guess you have to listen to audiobook to lighten boredom.

I wonder what happens to your longer post when you're latnum (or premium, or blue, or whatever) and you eventually not renew. Will the limit come back? Contents get shrunk?

Today I had an experience that shook me to my core and I can’t stop thinking about it. We were having a nice dinner at a restaurant in Skopje. Nothing too fancy, just local food at a local restaurant. A girl passed by selling balloons, she must have been around 9 or so. My 4 yo daughter started crying for one, while I told her no. Eventually the girl gave her one anyway while I struggled to explain that we have no cash with us. As a desperate attempt to give *something* back, I gestured towards the table full of food we were about to leave and invited her to take anything she wants. Folks… the spark in her eyes will haunt me. She would fill napkin after napkin with food, pausing to look around fearfully, as if she was expecting to be told off by someone. 💔 Every time she would load another napkin with more food, she’d confirm with me multiple times that indeed, it was actually, really ok to take that too. 💔 At some point the waiter came to check on things, whom I reassured that yes, it was ok, and she was our guest. Before leaving she gave each of us the most heartfelt hug. We hugged her back. @svgeesus broke into tears after she left. I did not, but I certainly felt like it. It’s been hours since and I can’t stop thinking about it. There’s no moral of the story here, make up your own takeaways. Little balloon girl, wherever you are, I’m so sorry the world has already failed you like that. I wish I had done more to help you 💔
