The American people rightly do not want a war with Iran. President Trump’s war is not smart, it is not legal, it is not morally right, and it is not in our national interest. The risk to our servicemembers, citizens, and allies which it creates is not justified by Iran’s threat to our own security, and the threat of a wider conflict that destabilizes the region is significant. Recent history has shown repeatedly that wars in the Middle East are far easier to begin than they are to finish. 1/4

The Iran war has raised gas prices about 33 percent in three weeks, adding nearly $1 to the average gallon. This week, the nationwide average gas price hit $3.91 — the highest in almost four years. See how much your car model is costing you at the pump: wapo.st/4lIlxvq

Trump lit the Middle East on fire without consulting Congress. He continues to present us with lies, chaos, shifting objectives and escalation without an end game. The only answer from my colleagues on a supplemental to fund the war in Iran should be: Hell no.

Why is it so hard for Trump to say no to secret police? Why is it so hard for Trump to fund the law-abiding parts of DHS and ensure TSA workers are paid? President Trump doesn't care about Americans being killed in the streets or havoc at the airport, He'd rather continue make life more stressful for the American people than do the work of governing.
New York Magazine@NYMag

Senate Republicans had a deal to end the DHS shutdown, but Trump chose ICE airport chaos instead. The president is throwing a tantrum over the SAVE America Act, so now American travelers are paying the price. nymag.com/intelligencer/…

A straight up lie. Obama’s JCPOA halted Iran's nuclear weapons program, making America and the world safer. We argued then, correctly, that the likeliest alternative to the deal was war. President Trump tore up that deal anyway, failed to negotiate a new diplomatic agreement, and then decided to wage a reckless war that continues to have devastating consequences for the American people.

16 years ago, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law—a landmark achievement that transformed health care in America.   Today, tens of millions of Americans have peace of mind about their health because of the expanded coverage and better benefits of Obamacare.

The day the Affordable Care Act passed was one of my proudest moments as president, because it meant that millions of Americans would have access to health care, some for the first time. The ACA also prevented insurance companies from denying people with pre-existing conditions coverage, allowed young people under the age of 26 to remain on their parents’ plan, expanded Medicaid, and so much more. But the ACA was always meant to be a first step. We still have to do more to expand access and make health care more affordable for everyone.

By 2025, the Affordable Care Act helped provide health care coverage for 45 million Americans. Republicans have since taken a sledgehammer to the ACA to pay for tax cuts for the wealthiest among us. It's wrong, but Democrats continue to fight to protect access to health care.

It's important not to shy away from candidly discussing the President's increasingly erratic behavior. His worsening instability is a clear and growing threat, not only to the American people but to the world.

Republicans blocked Democrats' bill to pay TSA workers AGAIN.   Then, they blocked our bill to fund all of DHS besides ICE & CBP...AGAIN.   We've given Republicans every chance to solve this TODAY. They refuse unless Congress cuts a blank check to ICE. Not happening.

This is the only thing you need to know. Democrats want to open TSA. Republicans are refusing because they want to attach ICE funding. That’s why there are long lines. ICE.
Brian Schatz@brianschatz

We are enthusiastically willing to pay TSA workers today, and we will keep trying, but the sticking point is that Republicans want to attach ICE funding to it. We are not in agreement about ICE, but I don’t think workers and travelers should have to wait for an ICE deal.

Senate Dems have offered legislation to fully fund TSA, FEMA, and cyber defense agencies, but Republicans have blocked our efforts. If they truly cared about the safety and convenience of Americans, they'd stop playing politics with security services, pass funding for most DHS components, and work with us on common sense ICE reforms.

Just 3 days ago Trump was awfully concerned about the “pallets of cash” sent to Iran a decade ago, but is now going to give them nearly 10x that amount in the middle of a war. Clown show doesn’t begin to describe it.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent@SecScottBessent

Iran is the head of the snake for global terrorism, and through President Trump’s Operation Epic Fury, we are winning this critical fight at an even faster pace than anticipated. In response to Iran’s terrorist attacks against global energy infrastructure, the Trump Administration will continue to deploy America’s economic and military might to maximize the flow of energy to the world, strengthen global supply, and seek to ensure market stability. Today, the Department of the Treasury is issuing a narrowly tailored, short-term authorization permitting the sale of Iranian oil currently stranded at sea. At present, sanctioned Iranian oil is being hoarded by China on the cheap. By temporarily unlocking this existing supply for the world, the United States will quickly bring approximately 140 million barrels of oil to global markets, expanding the amount of worldwide energy and helping to relieve the temporary pressures on supply caused by Iran. In essence, we will be using the Iranian barrels against Tehran to keep the price down as we continue Operation Epic Fury. This temporary, short-term authorization is strictly limited to oil that is already in transit and does not allow new purchases or production. Further, Iran will have difficulty accessing any revenue generated and the United States will continue to maintain maximum pressure on Iran and its ability to access the international financial system. So far, the Trump Administration has been working to bring around 440 million additional barrels of oil to the global market, undercutting Iran’s ability to leverage its disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump’s pro-energy agenda has driven U.S. oil and gas production to record levels, strengthening energy security and lowering fuel costs. Any short-term disruption now will ultimately translate into longer-term economic gains for Americans – because there is no prosperity without security.

This is truly amazing. If you wanted to do this ridiculous thing, there was at least a way to avoid putting money directly into Iranian government hands. But, that would require thought, strategy, and diplomatic work. They chose the dumbest way to do this deeply dumb thing.

BREAKING: US Treasury eases oil sanctions on Iran, including permiting the sale of Iranian crude and refined products into the United States. Scott Bessent calls it a "narrowly tailored, short-term authorization permitting the sale of Iranian oil currently stranded at sea."
