This is a valid argument. VAR can have 100 FPS, but the player's foot sudden speed can be 10 m/s. Hence the accuracy and the error of the VAR would be 10 and 5 cm. In this photo the offside is 2-4 cm!!! Premier league considers a 5 cm buffer for their system, but FIFA doesn't?!

@DefensePolitics Don't worry, we've moved on. My post was reminding that people's reaction to this offside decision wasn't because the rules weren't followed. I was emphasizing that the technology isn't flawless. This us a problem that lots of people have pointed out for a while now!

@kampforum If they use such technics, it would linear interpolation which can go totally wrong. Especially when the devices have a speed ratio of 10 (500/50). It doesn't resolve the issue it makes it more complicated!

@rganjvar They use digital twins of players to generate frames between the actual picture frames, tonoffset the weakness of the cameras fps.

حرف حسابی. دوربین وار ۵۰fps است ، اما سرعت ناگهانی پای بازیکن ۱۰ متر بر ثانیه؛ در نتیجه، دقت و میزان خطای VAR به ترتیب ۲۰ و ۱۰ سانتی‌متر خواهند بود. در این تصویر، میزان آفساید ۲ تا ۴ سانتی‌متر است!!! لیگ برتر برای سیستم خود یک خطای ۱۰ س‌م در نظر می‌گیرد، اما فیفا ...؟!

@kampforum Even if the ball tracking runs at 500 Hz, the overall system accuracy is bottlenecked by the camera feed at 50 Hz. We can’t get sub-10 cm precision if the source images are only updating at 50 fps. They have better cameras but, it appears, they use them for slow motions only.

@rganjvar Actually, the sensor in the ball is 500Hz, so 500fps with the generated frames between actual picture frames.

@g_m_logan I believe they use SAOT (Semi-Automated Offside Technology), which relies on 50 fps cameras for tracking. I initially thought they used better cameras, but I was wrong. The high-speed cameras you're referring to are mainly for slow-motion replays.

@rganjvar True but that’s not the technology they use. SOAR which is a mix of cameras and individual scans of player with 10k data points

@lukkaaaass If the tracking runs at 50 Hz, it means they're using 50 fps cameras. That alone introduces roughly a 10 cm error due to the time between frames. A 500 Hz ball tracker is fine by itself, but the final accuracy is still limited by the camera frame rate.

@rganjvar Correct. I just assumed fifa was using the same system with a 5cm margin of error as the Prem, but they have their own that “has” a 0mm(?!) margin of error. And I can’t find any info about the actual precision of the system beyond 500hz for the ball and 50hz for player tracking.
