We call on architects, engineers, planners, and quantity surveyors to prioritize human-centred designs, as there is a strong linkage between safe and well-constructed buildings and health. The way we design homes, hospitals, schools, roads, and public spaces directly affects the safety, wellbeing, and quality of life of communities. Today’s engagement with the Board of Registration of Architects and Quantity Surveyors (BORAQS) on “Health, Dignity and Inclusion in the Built Environment” provided an opportunity for stakeholders in health and public works to explore the relationship between infrastructure development, public health, safety, inclusion, and environmental sustainability. We noted that unhealthy environments continue to contribute to disease outbreaks, poor sanitation, respiratory illnesses, and injuries. The Ministry of Health maintains that investing in healthier infrastructure is also an investment in preventive healthcare, resilience, and national productivity.

Even if Citizen TV puts all Luo noisemakers (Eric Okeyo, Willis Otieno etc) on their morning shows to shout WANTAM from morning to evening; Monday to Monday; the Luo community will never vote alongside Rigathi Gachagua and Dr. Fred “River Yala” Matiangi. Gachagua is a primitive tribalist. The Luo cannot support a ticket which is stacked against them from the onset— we will be too stupid to repeat that mistake. **** Matiangi’s crime is that he messed up Raila Odinga in 2022. He was part of Uhuru Kenyatta’s long con. As the de-facto number two during handshake, Matiangi was very hostile to Raila Odinga and his people. Even though handshake and the ‘fall’ of [then DP] Ruto had been occasioned by Raila-Uhuru detente; the biggest beneficiary was Matiangi, who was elevated to run government through Executive Order No.1 of 2019. How many times did Hon. Junet Mohamed literally beg Matiangi to support Raila Odinga? Together with Kagwe they used to lock up the country by cooking COVID numbers. They did this to continue looting COVID donations but also to stall Raila Odinga, whom they wanted to endorse a Matiangi-Kagwe 2022. As Matiangi was locking up the country, DP Ruto ignored his charades and continued with his campaigns. DP’s Karen official residence could host delegations in thick of COVID, with no sanction. Raila, on the other hand, was tied by Matiangi/Kagwe public order and public health regulations; which locked the country up and banned crowding (remember the social distancing days). Towards the end of 2021 when they couldn’t lock up the country anymore, they now started piling pressure on President Uhuru not to endorse Raila, but to endorse a Matiangi-Kagwe ticket. Matiangi used the period to sponsor poll after poll on Raila’s “suitability”. Raila’s loss was Matiangi’s pet subject. He used to tell anyone who cared to listen to him that he was at better position to beat Ruto than Raila. That all Raila needed to do was back him. Today, he continues to exist as a fringe presidential candidate with less than 1% of the vote in opinion polls. He’s entire presidential bid is based on the hope that Uhuru will carry him on his back and deliver to him the Kikuyu vote. But the Kikuyu vote is with Rigathi Gachagua, not Uhuru Kenyatta.

Transport infrastructure remains a cornerstone of Kenya's economic growth, enabling the efficient movement of people, goods and services while unlocking the potential of underserved regions. The ongoing reconstruction and modernization of Ithookwe Airstrip, in Kitui County reaffirms this strategic focus, positioning the facility as a critical enabler of long-term regional connectivity and local economic transformation. Now in its final stages, the project has delivered a newly paved 950-metre asphalt runway (Runway 05/23), approximately 15 metres wide, complete with proper grading, compaction and surface finishing to meet aviation standards. The works also include a modern terminal building with a VIP reception area and lounges tailored for dignitaries and business travellers. Supporting infrastructure features a secure fence, a bitumen-standard car park and an internal access driveway. The expanded and well-marked apron enhances aircraft maneuverability, ensuring efficient parking and seamless ground operations for light aircraft and helicopters. The airstrip is already redefining travel efficiency, cutting flight time to Nairobi and Mombasa to about 35 minutes, a significant improvement from the long and often unpredictable road journeys. Strategically located, it serves as a vital link connecting Nairobi, Mombasa, Garissa and Wajir, while opening up Kitui as a gateway for mining investors, tourists to the South Kitui Game Reserve and critical emergency medical evacuation services. The upgraded infrastructure is designed to attract regular commercial light-aircraft services, stimulating trade, tourism and broader economic activity for local communities. The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration has been central to the airstrip's implementation and operationalisation, with a clear focus on strengthening security. Through controlled and closely monitored entry and exit points, the Department safeguards the facility against security risks while ensuring smooth, safe and efficient operations.

The Elephant@theelephantinfo

The Kenyan elite is not a monolith, but a class that has successfully consolidated its interests and identified its own survival as the primary goal. @WMutunga states that, while there is a serious division within their ranks, often manifesting as political theatre, this friction is rarely about the public good. Instead, it is a strategic management of power that keeps the masses distracted. How can we disrupt this cycle and reclaim our collective agency?
