60 Minutes is now doing damage control for Christopher Nolan/The Odyssey. The View’s Sonny Hostin claims “you don’t know history” if you don’t agree Helen of Troy could be black. Variety tried shaming critics/Elon for calling out DEI nonsense. Typical.

@kirkneverdied i wouldn't say pitt's performance was hated, but it was rated from poor to not very good. a lot of it was the characterization as well.

Since everyone is sharing their memories of the reception to Troy and Brad Pitt specifically… I remember the reception to the movie being VERY mixed not HATE. Some are claiming everyone hated Pitt. I don’t remember that at all.

“Greeks should fund their own movie” turns out we helped fund Nolan’s in which he spat on us and disrespected the hell out of the odyssey, the culture that birthed it and the Greek people by completely removing us from our own story.

43 year old guy here. It definitely wasn't. I saw it in theaters. Everyone loved it, and Pitt especially. He was widely praised at the time for his performance in the role. He had a brooding intensity that really captured the essence of Achilles, and his physical performance in combat was excellent. Very convincing. I'm hardly alone in this view. Everything about Troy was better than this new Odyssey disaster: from casting to clothing.

If you make a movie about Greeks without any Greek/Med actors, and you don't even try to pick those anglos that could pass as Greeks,it's quite telling:it speaks of your wish to present yourself as the descendants of the Ancients+disposess current Mediterraneans of their history.

Christopher Nolan seems to be deliberately turning the Odyssey into a train wreck. I would propose two different directors: Mel Gibson or Robert Eggers. Mel would have the whole thing in Greek and actually have historical armour. Eggers would make it dark and mysterious, even nightmarish. In both cases it would be extremely violent, like the actual story was.

@FortressLugh It’s one of the highest grossing films of all time. Critics liked it. Serious movie critics accused it of being unfaithful to the Iliad. Now the movie Alexander on the other hand was a critical and pretty much a commercial flop

The pre-emptive backlash against Christopher Nolan’s Odysseus isn’t because they’re dicks It actually shows audiences are brilliant It shows people love entertainment and they truly want IMMERSION They genuinely want to lose themselves in a story But you can’t do that when there are such palpable obvious dickish moves that deviate from authenticity so aggressively - especially when people know they’re having an agenda pushed on them that has nothing to do with the actual story Again it destroys immersion in the tale And of course people can reinterpret historical source material and give a twist to things - but the kind of woke twist we’re seeing isn’t novel, it isn’t subversive, it isn’t fresh, interesting or thought provoking - it’s just absolutely hack, tedious, passé, boring and utterly yawn inducing Just give people something real - as real as possible - so they can lose themselves Stop pulling people out of a story and trying to make them aware that you’re superior to them because of your dull cultural and political onanism
