@kronicspin1 @Hoozbad @ch1cky_nuggies @CultureCrave Exactly. The only R Rated movie that did better at the box office at this point was Deadpool and Wolverine, and when you’re in the company of a Marvel movie featuring a team up of two of the most popular heroes ever, you’re in great company.

@Hoozbad @ch1cky_nuggies @CultureCrave It’s way overperforming. A 3 hour, R rated, non franchise, non sequel, was never going to be the highest grossing movie of all time no matter what. If it makes a billion worldwide, which it’s on pace to, that’s more than a movie like it should, by a lot

@ch1cky_nuggies @CultureCrave It’s not flopping, it’s just not doing as good as it should. A Nolan making the odyssey should have been the highest grossing movie of all time. But it’s not even close because he made a terrible decision with some of the castings.

Why didn’t they just make Zendaya Helen of Troy? Would anyone have complained about this? I don’t think so. Instead they made the most attractive woman in the movie someone other than the most attractive woman in the movie. Makes zero sense.

@GibbsCalhoun @emzanotti She’s saying how weird it is how so many of you conservative social media “warriors” are so obsessed with a movie failing and so willing to do whatever it takes to avoid admitting you were wrong. I’ve seen more of you types posting about this movie then when Biden won in 2020

@emzanotti Why is this "weird?" Publishing houses do this all the time with books they know won't sell (Kamala's "107 Days," Hillary's "What Happened.") This is standard practice in the entertainment industry.

@Bas3dPhilosophy @MiddleBrownie Lol chill, it’s only been out 1 weekend. Also it doesn’t need that much to break even. But even if it did, it will get that easily. Oppenheimer made $975 million worldwide off an $82 million opening weekend domestically. The Odyssey made $124 million domestically opening weekend

@DockeryRon3863 @MiddleBrownie 😂 Do you think it’s only going to be in theatres one weekend and it’s done? It will make $650 million before it hits the one month mark, and will end up with over a billion in its total run

The buzz for the Odyssey has gone away.. this is a few hours before the 10pm showing in the ONLY IMAX theater in my city (it’s a large city with a population near 1 million people).

@aniajaV @vevjuur5974 @GeraltofGoonia “If you only count the votes of the people who have watched the movie” Are you effing serious?? 😂 Saying review sites should allow people who have only viewed the trailer to review the movie is literally the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read on this app

@vevjuur5974 @GeraltofGoonia If you only count the votes of the people who have watched the movie, you've dismissed a large contingent of people who chose to speak with their wallets after watching the trailer. Verified audience scores are inherently biased.

@Circular_Truth @DontWalkRUN Typically when people reference a film’s budget, it’s the cost to actually make the movie. Marketing spend is a separate budget. The two budgets aren’t combined into one. The real story here is how impressive it is for a film with such a high budget to make that in one weekend

Andrew @ Don’t Walk, RUN!
Movie theaters take 50% of the box office. Then there's the estimated $125-$150 million marketing budget. That means the movie has to make $750-$800 million before it breaks even. You'd think an X account called "Cinema Tweets" would have basic knowledge of how the movie business works.
Cinema Tweets@CinemaTweets1

BREAKING: The Odyssey has recovered its entire budget in two days. The film’s worldwide box office already brought in an estimated $257.8 million globally in its opening weekend. Domestically, Nolan’s latest is looking at a $120.5 million three-day debut, setting career records for both Nolan and Matt Damon.

@rombot89 @pureMetatron I mean it's been confirmed that rotten tomato has been deleting negative reviews (they have been doing so for years) so I don't trust rotten tomatoes site at all. Of course they would go ham on deleted reviews considering Comcast is a major stock owner of them.

I watched the Odyssey. Holy shit those movie critics and their reviews were actually completely lies. I don't even know how they sleep at night, lying like that. I'm filming my actual honest review tonight, I'll edit it and post it tomorrow. Aside from the awful race swaps, terrible costumes and disrespect for the Greeks, there were some actually really good things about this movie and of course some really bad things. I'll talk honestly about all, the goods and the bads, on tomorrow's review.

Fun fact: “The Odyssey” UNDERPERFORMED internationally too! $139.6 million from 73 international markets is absolutely DISASTROUS relative to the expectations, budget, and Nolan brand. And even moreso when you consider Nolan's home territory, UK/Ireland, delivered only a measley $17.4M! Other markets: 🇫🇷 France — $13.7M 🇮🇹 Italy — $11.5M 🇦🇺 Australia — $9.2M 🇩🇪 Germany — $8.0M 🇮🇳 India — $7.2M 🇲🇽 Mexico — $7.0M 🇪🇸 Spain — $5.2M 🇧🇷 Brazil — $4.7M 🇦🇪 UAE — $3.0M And the remaining 63 smaller markets combined contributed about $52.7M - less than $1 million per territory. For a $400M investment and a Nolan-level event film, these numbers should be much higher. Don't believe the hype.

@_BTPC_ @DarrylDodson4 @DontWalkRUN Mixed reception?? It had an A cinema score from audiences leaving the theatre after viewing, 97% rating on rotten tomatoes for critics and audiences, and set box office records for R Rated non franchise films. How is any of that “mixed”?

Movies gross their production budgets in the opening weekend all the time and still lose money. Suicide Squad far outperformed The Odyssey in its opening in both dollars and number of tickets sold and lost hundreds of millions. Given the mixed reception there's zero guarantee The Odyssey will see a profit. It has a lot of work to do.

@DarrylDodson4 @_BTPC_ @DontWalkRUN Ok I will admit the word choice in the headline probably wasn’t the greatest. But the point remains- the movie grossed more than its budget in opening weekend, which means it’s well on its way to making true profit when everything else is factored out, which is super impressive

@rombot89 @_BTPC_ @DontWalkRUN It said the Odyssey had recovered Its entire budget. Recovered is the problem here if I say I lost $50 but it was recovered I don’t mean that somebody kept $25 and I got 25 back.

@_BTPC_ @DontWalkRUN All I’m doing is defending the post that said the movie has generated box office already that has surpassed the budget. The post doesn’t state that the studio itself has made revenue of $250 million or that they have made a profit of $7 million.

You're really not comprehending this. Ironic that you're making fun of him for not comprehending when you're so far off it's like watching a chimp try and do algebra. Domestically theaters take 50% and internationally upwards to 75%. That means 250*0.5 = 125. Not counting taxes and other random costs, Universal can apply approx $125 million towards the cost of producing the movie. The reality is much less because of the international box office which reduces that number by about a quarter more. So, this may shock you but $125 million is less than $250 million which means that no, they haven't covered costs yet. To cover production costs they need around $600 million. Take marketing into consideration and additional costs hidden for tax purposes and the movie needs to push a billion for any meaningful profit.

@Krypto_Kenji @DontWalkRUN The post didn’t say the studio has made a revenue of $250 million on the movie though. It simply stated that the opening weekend box office surpassed the budget, which is a fact

@rombot89 @DontWalkRUN If 50% is going straight to the cinema then the movie isn’t making 250m in revenue though. That 250m is simply the box office, not revenue.

@DontWalkRUN I know how to read, I think you need to read how to comprehend. It had a budget of $250 million, it’s made $250 million. When box office numbers are reported, they don’t automatically take out what theaters keep. When it comes to how much profit it makes, that’s a different story

@rombot89 It didn’t recoup it’s $250 million budget if the movie theaters keep half of it. you totally need to learn how to read

@HomeChef_NC @DontWalkRUN Yes it does. Its budget before marketing was $250 million. It already recouped that. Now it needs to make more to make up for marketing spend and what theaters take, but how is that hard to understand it had a budget of $250 million and it’s already made $250 million?
