@Landon_D_ It's so strange that they seem to be trying to force a DOA/VF style "in your face" fighter, without either of those games' defensive options that make it interactive. Not that I'd like it if they did that anyway; Tekken is Tekken, and I wanna make someone whiff then launch them.

Tekken 7 tracking and damage was too high, and punished you for playing aggressive. Tekken 8 tracking feels better but you have to hold string 50/50s and buttons you can't move around. If backdash and sidesteps got buffed it'd be perfect. That skill expression is missing

I am praying with all my spirit that Murray and Nakatsu understand that gamers at all levels love movement. Gamers will try out a game just because they heard the movement is good. It's what made older Tekken games exhilarating. RUSH and Deadlock are perfect examples of this
Kyokuji@KyokujiFGC

This was one of those moments where I felt like a game producer (Michael Murray) accidentally said the quiet part out loud. If your competitive game isn't "skewed towards higher level players" then what you have is a glorified party game. Explains a lot about the state of T8.

@TrentonJBurton they buffed movement from t4 -> t5, and again from t6 -> TTT2. they're pretty capricious about how they treat movement in tekken, tbh, which just shows confusion about their own game.

@KSRD_718 @PhiDXGames i would definitely argue that tekken wasn't designed to be that way at all and it was very much an unintentional side effect of being the one fighting game that lets you block and backdash at the same time. and their solution is to keep making backdashes shorter.

I was wrong about "cannot KBD in DOA" I skimmed like four Top 8 matches and wasn't able to find any KBD until Evo 2018 grand finals, so I assumed that even if it was a thing, it wasn't competitively relevant. Then some DOA players including Rikuto himself corrected me with some clips and explanations, which was cool If DOA6 or 5LR had rollback I'd be interested in giving them a spin and see how much I could abuse KBD, because in-and-out spacing mindgames are more fun to me than up-close string mindgames I stand on the VF stuff though😛
PhiDX@PhiDXGames

I cannot Korean Backdash in VF or DOA. The gameplay that I find unappealing in T8 is not fixed by playing VF. For the movement and spacing game I want to play, the next best alternative was probably SSBM. @alcratz's R.U.S.H. has taken that spot now. The 1 hour I played was the most fun I've had in FGs in forever.

@BIudika Seriously, it's so weird. Like, online matchmaking has existed in Tekken forever! New players get to grow their skill gradually over time and not get instantly gate-kept by vets. Problem solved! Nerfed backdashes help no one!

@KyokujiFGC Why do devs think new players are fighting veterans all the fucking time??? Rank mode exists for a fucking reason. Do they think newcomers are facing bunch of Knee’s and Arslan on a daily basis? They are NOT

Also, reminder that back in T7, Michael Murray said that backdashes were nerfed because "not being able to land any hits on a veteran was bad for the new player experience." Basically that he thinks footsies are a design flaw. Not what you want to hear from a FG producer.

@SpaghettiRip I legit think they look at the play rate for Alisa at a high level and decide that because really good players don't like playing her, she must be bad. But she's just boring as fuck! No skill expression! Unless you're a waifu main (Chanel) or a sicko, why would you play her?

@R3d_Horse The comic being significantly more humorous and light-hearted are to its benefit in this regard. The comics do get more sincere and serious towards the second half, but it's tough to see how they can square the circle gracefully when it comes to stuff like this.

@PhiDXGames lowkey also: generic d4's used to be safer, and life totals were smaller. Even characters with bad lows could start meaningfully chipping you down with a fast, evasive low for relatively low risk.

I think it's pretty elegant how old Tekken games answered turtling with universal mixup grabs and unblockable running tackles I didn't appreciate it at the time, but I think it may have been a mistake to remove those in T7.

@6weetbix The population of Tekken players who hate the game is higher than the total population of all VF players, which gives VF this funny advantage in the discourse. VF players will make you think VF is this uber-game with no equal, because the only people who still play VF love it!

Tekken 8's design philosophy is to have more forced up-close interactions and to make decisions more high commitment. It's very odd that VF players will see Tekken players complaining about this and think that VF is the thing they're looking for.
DEMETRIUS! (Cmoney) (Dee all the way G)@NanceDemetrius

Virtua Fighter has always had better movement. The real reason that Tekken players won’t dedicate themselves to vf is because vf punishes the movement that Tekken is based from. For example KBD would get punished just by a neutral mid kick for big stagger guaranteed damage.

@koenjideck Seriously. It's like if you're complaining about SF6 and someone said "have you tried Mortal Kombat?" They're two completely different games, but I guess they're both 2D!

I get the push to try to get Tekken players to try other 3D fighting games. I love DOA and VF, but it's worth understanding why people enjoy playing Tekken. The characters and world are factors to people, amongst other things, but the big one for me is the movement. Other 3D fighting games are primarily designed around guard buttons that anchor your movement if you want to defend. Tekken allows you to freely express your defence with the way you pilot your movement, and there's nothing really like it.

@byJoka "new" move that's just a reused animation, given an up-back input because movesets are so bloated they have to use up inputs, buggy on launch, and even when working correctly does something no one asked for. season 3 is so cool

@Speedkicks Season 2 had a vision that was successfully met. That vision was dogshit, obviously, but it was explainable. What was the vision for Season 3?

It demonstrates a stronger lack of developer skill than even the season 2 patch when you think about it.

@tyler_beecroft In some ways this patch is more shocking than Season 2. Like, it's not *worse*, but just very startling how obvious it is now that there's no one behind the wheel that actually knows anything about Tekken. Bamco's got interns from that failed MMO working on this game.

@PhiDXGames "dev team was getting annoyed by dealing with that move" is such a good way to phrase how I've been feeling about a ton of these changes too. Claudio's unblockable had its tracking nerfed... like, you KNOW someone at bamco was getting their ass beat by that shit.

Feng changes are bizarre Nerfing baby tantrum feels like someone on the dev team was getting annoyed by dealing with that move (kinda like the drag qcb2 change). Frame situation off STC.2 doesn't seem game-breaking, but seems really annoying to deal with The Heihachi ub1+2,1+2 instant-charge is hilarious. Same bug as Asuka from S2 launch

@Le_Brutus Ed barely getting looked at to any degree is genuinely shocking. Like, for how much absolute hatred that character got from the Japanese playerbase, you know that capcom heard them loud and clear, and then said "fuck yall. we buffed mai. buy more avatar gear."

@PhiDXGames "Baffling" is how I would describe this patch. Like, season 2 was "holy fuck they nuked the entire game", and this patch is just a bunch of "huh? what? why? that's weird." Paragraph after paragraph of meaningless nonsense, unneeded buffs/new moves, or minor nerfs at best.

@MandelaFace The metaphor here makes no sense on, like, any level, but it's extra funny because if you were going to map this on to factions from the movie, then Iran, the side enacting the trade blockade, is represented by evil yellow-peril aliens.
