i missed my flight today. and because of that, i spent the last 2 hours in an airport lounge drinking cocktails, eating gas tomato soup, and crying with a stranger whose story i’ll probably never forget. he was ex-military. first time ever flying. heading home for his grandfather’s bereavement - the man who raised him like a dad. in 2012 his grandma died while he was driving past their house. coroner said 4:30pm. he passed by at 4. he still believes that if he had stopped, maybe he could have saved her. you could hear the weight of that “maybe” in every word he said… he hates funerals. “they suck,” he said. “funerals aren’t closure. the only thing that matters is saying goodbye while people are still alive.” now he’s flying to tell his grandpa how much he meant to him - how he saved him, how he convinced him to join the military, how he pulled him out of a life surrounded by addiction when he was just 8 years old. his life isn’t easy. paycheck to paycheck at a car shop. one credit card he barely uses. a brutal divorce. just him and his son in maine now. drove two days to boston when his car broke down, barely slept, took the cheapest spirit flight he could find. he only ended up in the lounge because another stranger told him he could pay $50 to enter for some rest and food/drinks. the only reason we met is because i missed my flight. it’s wild how airports strip everyone down to just “people waiting.” founders, soldiers, strangers - same chairs, same delayed timelines. two completely different lives, bonding over shared grief, jokes about our shared hatred for UF (sorry gators), and quiet truths about other’s lives that you just don’t usually get to hear out loud. he told me: say goodbye while you still can. don’t assume you’ll get another chance. i guess sometimes the most important conversations in your life happen because something went wrong
