Today in 1994, over 250,000 people were killed in a single day during the Genocide against the Tutsi, the deadliest day of the 100 days that engulfed Rwanda in darkness. A genocide of proximity, where killings unfolded within families and communities, in homes, churches, schools, and stadiums; those places once meant for life, quickly turned into sites of massacre. #Kwibuka32

She was beautiful, she was gracious, she was majestic. She was a queen. Rosalie Gicanda (1928-1994), last Queen of Rwanda, was known for regularly sharing milk in Taba, Butare with children from her neighbourhood. I am pretty much sure that the souls of those who took her life, this day of 20 April 1994, will always be tormented. #Kwibuka32

Dear Survivor, Your testimony stays with us — the small, impossible choices you were forced to make as a child. Giving away the little money you had, hoping it might save a sibling. Wearing layers of clothing, prepared for nights in the cold. Being told to run in different directions — trusting that, God willing, you would meet again. We also remember those who, though not targeted, chose to risk everything to protect others — affirming, even in the darkest moments, the possibility of humanity. These are not just memories. They are truths that shape our collective responsibility. As President @PaulKagame reminded us on 7 April, your strength is a reservoir of humanity that continues to define who we are. Your loved ones live on in our memory, and in every step this country takes forward. May you find moments of peace, and the strength to continue, at your own pace. #Kwibuka32

During this commemoration week, I learned a rather funny unfunny fact. There was a tried and sentenced white genocidaire. His name is Georges Ruggio , he worked for RTLM and would announce where Tutsis were hidden and would encourage Interahamwe to keep killing

On April 13, they came to kill me. They left me there… thinking I was already gone. My body was broken. My head was cut. I was covered in pain and silence. But inside me… life was still there. I don’t know how I survived. I don’t know how I opened my eyes again. But I did. This picture shows what they did to me. The wounds. The scars. The moment they thought my life was finished. But look at me now… I am alive. I am breathing. I am standing. I carried my pain. I cried. I healed slowly. I rebuilt myself piece by piece. And today… I rise. They thought they ended my story. But my story continued. I am not just a survivor. I am life that refused to die.

I can’t find words for what it does to our hearts seeing these “cleaned up” images of our loved ones. It makes them so heartbreakingly real in a different way. More than the hazy memories of blurry photos,they look like me, like my sisters. Mukomeze kuruhukira mu mahoro beza bacu
