My dad used to work at a British merchant bank where there were literally no managers. The CEO used to sit at the trading desk and do sales calls. They used to laugh and scoff at the ridiculous bureaucracy of American banks and how inefficient they were. Anyways, the merchant banks all got outcompeted and his firm was bought by credit agricole

Was driving around yesterday with my dad and noticing all of the luxury apartment complexes popping up (there were none when I was growing up) and asked why anyone willing to pay that much for rent in the suburbs (these are like almost NYC prices) and he told me what the housing prices have gone up to and I couldn’t believe it. I knew the housing market was crazy but I didn’t realize it was THAT crazy. No wonder people are putting off having kids! The “hookup/birth control” narrative is very convenient but can people on the right be serious for a second and acknowledge that it is pretty much impossible for people in their 20s to have a growing family in a high COL area with these prices.

Honestly a rough pass that would filter out 50% of AI reply bots is seeing if they’re replying to a long post requiring contextual awareness with multiple sentences 5 seconds after it’s posted.
Humans can’t read or type that fast, even if terminally online.

this question keeps me up at night:
the US had 50% of global manufacturing output after WWII and we gave it up. knowing a strong industrial base ensures your future, why would we do that? if AI now ensures our future, are we going to give that up too?

Why on earth should we be concerned about this? The problem with child pornography is not that its consumption is inherently immoral, but that its production entails harm. Would you say that dangerous mining conditions make lab-grown diamonds immoral too?

i get the vibe here, but...
we do mostly need the capital for build AI that can do science, and for sure we are focused on AGI with almost all of our research effort.
it is also nice to show people cool new tech/products along the way, make them smile, and hopefully make some money given all that compute need.
when we launched chatgpt there was a lot of "who needs this and where is AGI".
reality is nuanced when it comes to optimal trajectories for a company.
