I have witnessed this club go from doubters to believers, and from believers to champions. It took hard work and I always did everything I could to help the club get there. Nothing makes me prouder than that. Us crumbling to yet another defeat this season was very painful and not what our fans deserve. I want to see Liverpool go back to being the heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear and back to being a team that wins trophies. That is the football I know how to play and that is the identity that needs to be recovered and kept for good. It cannot be negotiable and everyone that joins this club should adapt to it. Winning some games here and there is not what Liverpool should be about. All teams win games. Liverpool will always be a club that means a great deal to me and to my family. I want to see it succeed for long after I have moved on. As I’ve always said, qualifying to next season’s Champions League is the bare minimum and I will do everything I can to make that happen.

I think it’s the worst thing Labour could do right now, there’s no reason to panic over some adverse polling less than two years into a ten year project - and some of what we’re seeing is more opportunism than panic - but if there is to be a leadership contest my first choice for the job would be Keir, that’s who I’ll back. The NHS has been battered for 14 years by Tory neglect and underfunding. Just as things are starting to turn a corner, Wes decides to walk away from a job he’s actually good at. Because he’s lost confidence apparently. Hard to square that with his talk of being proud to fight in the trenches with Keir at the general election. When the going gets tough and all that…... People around Ed Miliband have been briefing that he’s urged Keir to set a timetable to walk away - unhelpful enough to say it - worse to leak it to the press. Ed is seen as a potential contender, I’m not convinced. A few weeks ago,  he told the country he would finally break the link, the market mechanism that drives our energy bills sky-high in a crisis - the following week he announced the details and he did not break the link or even weaken it. Ed misled the country in my view and the Prime minister. Keir's top team should be standing behind him right now - and not with knives in their hands. How about some policy ideas? This whole leadership circus is a massive distraction from the job, not just at a time of global crisis but at a time when the people of Britain are making clear they want more change, they want to feel the change in their lives. The answer to that, some seem to think - is to have a new leader. That’s a delusion and often enough a conceit, sold to us on the premise it’s in the national interest or the party’s interest - when the truth is much closer to home. Labour has a job to do and a mandate to do it. Let’s get on with it.

@DeborahMeaden This is all such a mess. So many good things happening, so let’s get rid off the PM! Just read (rumour) that Burnham could reinstate Corbyn’s membership. Just imagine. What are they doing to themselves?

More good stuff and so much more to be done if Labour would unite around the PM .

📢 Big news: UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has announced landmark new government plans to treble the amount of surplus food made available for redistribution in the UK. The move aims to tackle both food waste and food poverty at a time when many households continue to face cost of living pressures. Our CEO, Catherine David, has welcomed the announcement: “The Prime Minister’s announcement of a national programme to treble the redistribution of surplus food to people and communities across the UK is a vital step forward. WRAP supports the organisations on the front line of this critical work, as well as the incredible work of the King’s Coronation Food Project. "I’m delighted WRAP was part of the discussions helping to shape this national ambition. Redistribution has a critical role to play, supporting stretched households while reducing the enormous financial and environmental cost of good food going to waste. We must also recognise the huge opportunity to prevent food waste from happening in the first place, particularly in our homes. Home is where most of the UK’s food waste occurs, which can cost a family of four an average of £1,000 – and we know that over 70% of people are worried by rising food prices. "At a time when households are under growing financial pressure, tackling household food waste is one of the most immediate ways we can help people save money, strengthen food security and build resilience for the future. "Today, with supply chains straining under geopolitical disruption and the cost of living continuing to rise, we must treat food as the precious resource it is. We cannot afford, economically, environmentally or socially, for wasting food to remain the norm. Whether in the fields, factories, shops, restaurants or our own kitchens, reducing food waste must become a shared national effort. “As our world becomes an ever more unpredictable place, wasting food is a cost we can no longer afford to ignore and we are talking with key partners in government, the food sector, the media, philanthropists and innovators to tackle the food bills crisis in people's homes. We call on all partners to step forward and step up their efforts in the weeks and months ahead.”

This is not a game. This instability has consequences for people’s lives. The people who will be hurt most will be those that elected us less than two years ago. We must unite behind the Prime Minister.
Paul Johnson@PJTheEconomist

Starmer and Reeves are not kidding when they say this political uncertainty causes economic damage. The only “reset” being achieved at the moment is higher borrowing costs. Result? We’re all worse off. So deeply depressing.

I have listened to the Prime Minister's speech this morning. I welcome the renewed energy and ideas. However, I have reluctantly concluded that this morning’s speech was too little too late.

Today I’m pleased to appoint @GordonBrown as my Special Envoy on Global Finance and Cooperation. As Britain’s longest-serving Chancellor, Gordon is well placed to work with our international allies to build a stronger Britain and boost our country’s security and resilience.

@RhonddaBryant I just feel sad and worried that we are sleepwalking towards autocracy. Serious shake up needed. Use your best people. Could Burnham be deputy and you use his ability to communicate? The PM can focus on challenging international crises which are his forte. Please do something 🙏

I’m gutted by the results in Wales and across the country. We have to do some real soul searching to drive forward the kind of change our country so obviously desperately wants and needs. The PM is right these are areally tough set of results for Labour.

@bmay He also should not be afraid of competent people. Bring in Burnham. Make him the deputy. Starmer works on the international portfolio (his strength) and Burnham domestic. Utilise his communication skills to make it feel fresh and more engaging. Keep your enemies close!

My largely unpopular view is that if Starmer had a chancellor who understood business, hadn’t shafted SMEs in her first budget in the most catastrophic & ignorant way, was a bit less ‘class war’ and didn’t think government ££££ creates economic dynamism, Labour would do better.
