What’s the more honest display of cherry-picking: citing the Colts’ 30th-ranked points per drive defense over a 16-game regular season, plus the 27 points they surrendered in the AFC Championship, or ignoring totality in favor of three select games that better match an opposing narrative? However you slice it, the total body of defensive support for Manning in 2006 was really, really bad. Can you find a weaker unit to have supported any of the other 59 Super Bowl Champions?

@ryanmichael I do not think you can reasonably fault a defense for giving up points to one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, and to single out that one game as indicative of the Colts defensive performance that postseason is crazy cherrypicking.

@reatinevarro Giving up 27 points in an AFC Championship game with the season on the line = “whatever”?

@ryanmichael Yes. Sanders came back, and outside of the AFCCG (Brady putting up 27 points on them is whatever), they allowed 8, 6, and 10. Manning wasn’t as bad as his statline, but any other qb is getting ripped for 3 tds & 7 picks. A run like that from Brady would fuel 5000 Kascmar posts

Is there a weaker Super Bowl champion—outside of quarterback—than the 2006 Colts? • 30th in defensive points allowed per drive • 27th in average starting field position • Leading rusher: 18th in the NFL • Third-leading receiver: 107th in the NFL • Allowed 27 points in the AFC Championship

@xfat_joex Agreed. But they also went 9-3 without him. Which is an astounding achievement given how poorly supported Manning was.

@ryanmichael Context matters. They were hurt a lot throughout the regular season, and getting Bob Sanders back changed the entire dynamic of that defense in the playoffs.

@cbswartz5 Agreed. But a Super Bowl off a 9-win regular season isn’t nearly as impressive as a Super Bowl off a 12-win regular season.

@ryanmichael The 2011 Giants had no business being there at all. They were lucky to have made the postseason.

I've posted this stuff for years. Brady didn't have the playoff records until he played in more games than any other QB ever has.

@ScottKacsmar For the Brady issue, so you think a solution to that would be production per game instead of gross production to weed out some of the stuff that’s built on him playing longer than everyone?

I wouldn’t say Joe Burrow is the most underrated QB in the NFL right now. But the arguments made against his place amongst the Top-5 definitely push him into underrated territory. Flimsy.

More proof that the “numbers bad” mindset is wildly archaic One of the most old school HCs in the NFL has his staff opening up game prep about the opposing QB for the AFC CG with EPA Get with the times or be left in the dust

The NFL’s most common overcorrection: Running on 2nd and 10 after a 1st down incompletion. Since 2022, passes in this spot have crushed runs: +16.6 percentage points in success rate +0.23 EPA/play +6.5 percentage points in eventual series success rate Here are the 2026 play callers most likely to keep throwing:
