I had an incredible time in NYC this week at The Newsletter Conference. Here are my raw thoughts on the state of newsletters and media after attending both newsletter conferences this year: 1. Our little “newsletter bubble” is getting bigger 2. The Austin conference was catered toward the creator economy, while the NYC conference targeted big media 3. Everything always comes back to audience engagement and retention — in newsletters, in media, on the internet. If you can’t figure out how to keep your core audience in the place you’re creating for them, that should be the problem you solve before everything else. 4. No one knows as much as they think they do, and everyone knows more than they think they do. There are a lot of smart people in the room with you. Lean into them for input and insight, and remember that if you’re the smartest person in the room then your ego is going to destroy you. 5. If your gut is telling you that your content sucks, you might be dealing with imposter syndrome, but it’s also possible that your content sucks. Ask some people you trust which one it is and listen to them. 6. What goes around comes around. Don’t burn bridges. 7. You’re all shorter than I expected (except like 3 of you who are giants). 8. The medium you use to deliver your content to your audience (email, social, podcast, etc.) should be a direct reflection of how your core audience wants their information distributed. To win in this space means becoming a master of distribution. Don’t pigeonhole yourself to one thing if you haven’t tried others. 9. Email isn’t going anywhere tomorrow, but it is changing today more rapidly than it ever has since its conception. If you aren’t changing the way you think about email, you will not make it. 10. The way you make a dollar on the internet is going to change faster in the next 12-24 months than it has since the internet was created. If you’re making money on the internet today, consider yourself early. AI will enable 100x as many people to start making money on the internet, and it’s going to be mass chaos. 11. Don’t make AI an enemy. Learn it, use it, automate what can be automated without destroying the special touch you give to what you create. 12. Have fun. Some of you take yourselves way too seriously. Someday we’re all going to die (unless you’re Bryan Johnson). Have fun with what you do. This space is special. Love you all. Don’t be a stranger.
