I was recently in a “PD” on being trauma-informed and the presenters said if your walls are bare and the room is cold and sterile students will not feel safe or welcome. Next, they advised us to put up posters for anything and everything students may need to reference or know during the day. Finally, they recommended having every student bring in a family picture to hang up. I have over 100 students. As an act of defiance and civil disobedience, I proceeded to go to my room and take down one of my few remaining posters.

People hate when I say it, but it's true: If your classroom looks like the Pinterest board of a Ms. Rachel wannabe, it is distracting to the students. This is particularly true for the kids with ADHD. Treating your room as an outlet for your personal expression is a selfish and immature thing to do which actually has negative impact on your students.

@DavidJHarrisJr Ever notice how these people with mental problems are always sane enough to target small women? I guess the ‘schizophrenic’ voices in their head never tell them to try it with the 6’8” dude built like a brick shithouse.

Joshua James King—was arrested moments after the Sept. 4, 2020, unprovoked attack on Andrea Puerta aboard Miami's Metromover. He faced two felony battery counts and one misdemeanor. Due to schizophrenia claims, he was released on $1,500 bond for mental evaluations and house arrest while the case was pending. No public records show a full trial or sentencing outcome.

@Fmr_GangTECC @_meme_bots @ImMeme0 So they never fire their weapon… And don’t know how to defend themselves and instead fire their weapon.

@_meme_bots @ImMeme0 I can 100% confirm that this is true. Majority of LEO never use their weapon or even fire it outside of the semi-annual/annual qualifications assessment. Majority of them wouldn’t even know how to physically defend themselves which is why those officers always use their sidearm

🚨BREAKING: Video of the Democratic mayor of San Francisco is going viral after he calmly walked away while his security detail was being attacked. Mayor Daniel Lurie is seen watching his security officer struggle with a man, then turning and walking away as the officer is slammed to the ground, hits his head on the pavement, and is left bleeding.

@JamesAFurey Working in the system, the necessary changes are obvious: explicit instruction, professional curriculum, discipline. Then someone says: ThIs PbL IniTiAtiVe WiLl FiX eVeRYtHiNg!!!!

A depressing truth I've noticed through years of talking to teachers about education: Most teachers are simply not interested in getting better at their craft. Part of this is due to being jaded from the bevy of initiatives they've seen come and go at their schools, but part of it is because they are comfortable with what they do and fear change. If we had more teachers that were "lifelong learners," as we encourage our students to be, we might actually see some progress in education.

@HelpfulTeacher_ Managing classes of 30-40 children is reasonable within a system that has consequences for breaking rules. I taught classes of 30-35 in Vietnam with minimal disruptions. I’ve taught classes of 12 in the US that have been disasters.

If we didn't have schools 🏫 And we started them today, as a brand new idea 💡 Would *anyone* suggest a ratio of 1 teacher to 30 teenagers? You might say 1 : 5, 1 : 10 at a push 🧒 Expecting 1 adult to manage 30 teens, and know where they all are academically, is bonkers 🤦‍♂️

@OurOldDad @thejasonkantor Now do it everyday for a school year. My prediction is kids start tuning out the video by day 3. By day 8 it will be like the video isn’t even there.

We did an expirment in the 00s. We had one teacher show a video of a 2nd teacher giving a lecture. Then in the other class, the teacher who was videod gave the actual lecture. The students paid more attention to the video than they did to the live lecturer. The say they wouldn't respect a robot, but they would more than a human and that's saying something.

Student: "Mr. Kantor!! Are you worried that one day a robot is going to take your job?!" Me: No I'm not really worried. How could a robot replace my job? Is a robot going to stand up in front of the class and teach you? Will you respect and listen to it? Student: "I would never listen to a robot. We'd probably push it over. Honestly, we'd miss you if a robot took your job. Messing with a robot just wouldn't be the same as messing with you." Robots are not taking teacher's jobs anytime soon!

@MrDanielBuck I had a fraction of the disruptions in 35-40 student classes in Vietnam as I have in 12 person classes here in the US.

The kids you see fighting in these videos don’t want to be in school. They aren’t cut out for it. Pretending that they’re destined for academic excellence is absurd. Better to put them to work in the service industry or have them do manual labor than to try to teach them algebra.

@JamieClass5 @educator4ever36 @NYCMayor @nypost I’d rather have public schools with discipline and academic rigor where smart, ambitious students can rise on the basis of merit and distinguish themselves in a meaningful way.

@cboyack My brother. Go become a sub at a school near you. Put your philosophy of freedom into action. Let it be tested in the field by the 25 children in your class. Report back with your results. Don’t be shy.

The real curriculum in most schools: Sit down. Be quiet. Don't question authority. Wait for instructions. Then we wonder why adults can't think for themselves.
