Rest in Peace Professor @Joe_Nye who graciously served on the @cfkafrica board and was a cherished voice of humility and moral conscience. Joe wrote his dissertation on the rise of democracy in Kenya. Also thinking of his beloved wife Molly, who passed months ago.

Naming ceremony at USNA of an LPD-33 for Marine 1stLt Travis Manion, with whom I served in Fallujah nearly 20 years ago prior to him making the ultimate sacrifice. “Travis led the counterattack against enemy forces. He was fatally wounded by an enemy sniper while aiding and drawing fire away from his wounded comrades.” God bless him and his family, including Ryan Manion who leads the Travis Manion Foundation and is photographed here, and her daughter, Midshipman 4th Class Maggie Borek, who was a guest of honor today with her father Marine Colonel Tom Manion and Marine General Joe Dunford, our 19th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Vice Chair of the Travis Manion Foundation Board. General Dunford told us that when asked why he volunteered for another combat tour in Iraq in 2007, Travis replied: “If not me, then who…..”. This is the attitude we need more of in America today, as fewer young Americans chose to serve as civilians or in uniform. Freedom isn’t free.

Rest in Peace President Jimmy Carter. A view from this morning’s visit around 4:30 AM. A remarkable American experience to visit the Rotunda open to the public all night. A color guard led by an Air Force Senior Master Sergeant with each service represented including the Coast Guard silently stood watch around his casket. Visitors could come and silently spend as much time as they wanted in the majestic space surrounded by statues of other Presidents. I stood between the white marble lifesize statues Grant and Lincoln. Afterward visitors could write notes (as short or as long as one wished to write) in books and received the cards below that included a tally of President Carter’s life of service starting in the Navy. President Carter was a midshipman at the Naval Academy when FDR died in office. He recalled Truman as the president he most admired in his lifetime in this superb interview he gave with Mark Updegrove at the LBJ Library years ago. This is a link to part 5 of that interview where he speaks about Truman and his decision to desegregate the military, among other consequential decisions. President Carter is then asked what his advice is for young Americans.
