@doctorbattle That said, the “swing hard and hope you luck into contact and a hit” is basically what they tell bad-hitting pitchers when they have to hit (doesn’t happen anymore with universal DH).

@doctorbattle Billy Crystal was 59 years old when he took an at-bat for the Yankees in spring training. He fouled a pitch off. Almost anyone with decent hand-eye coordination, if given 100 pitches, will make contact w/ a few. But as others have noted, making contact is not “getting a hit”.

@1AverageRunner @Jacobtheclipper Ultra long distance swimming as well. And apparently 10m air rifle (b/c of how you have to hold the rifle, women's shorter stature and wider hips are a benefit).

@Jacobtheclipper I think Caitlin Clark could be a situational, spot up 3 point shooter in the NBA. Open, catch, shoot. But that’s it. She’d get roasted trying to D anyone up. There’s no sport where females and males are on the same playing level, except in really long distance ultramarathons .

@ReichelRadio Just a complete fluke that shows nothing other than 3-headed monster teams struggle when 2 of the 3 get hurt late in the season and no one else is there to pick up the slack.

@ReichelRadio Further, IIRC, 2nd injury happened AFTER brackets were announced. NCAA probably doesn't make them a 1 seed if the 2nd player got hurt before selection. And the 2nd injured girl was their 3-point shooter (the one who got hurt earlier & the healthy one didn't shoot 3s).

The idea of expanding the women's NCAA Tournament is actually insane. 14 seeds have NEVER won a game. 15 seeds have NEVER won a game. 16 seeds have won 1 game (Harvard 1998) It's already the chalkiest tournament in existence. They need LESS teams. Not more.
Yahoo Sports@YahooSports

The NCAA is expected to finalize an expansion of the men’s and women’s tournaments to 76 teams soon after the completion of this year’s March Madness tournament, per Yahoo Sports' @RossDellenger. Barring something unforeseen, “it will happen,” a high-placed source told Dellenger. The proposal would add eight games to the First Four, with 24 teams playing in an opening round before advancing into the second round.

@ReichelRadio That left the team with only one of their 3-headed monster. Harvard double and triple teamed her the entire game and made the rest of the team have to win it. They did not.

@ReichelRadio Plus that 16 seed game really needs an asterix. Stanford that year was 3 great players & not much more beyond that. Typically that's enough, particularly in 1998 women's CBB. Their best player got hurt late in the season & one of the other 2 got hurt right before the tournament.

@BruceFeldmanCFB Does the NFL still have that “extra practice squad spot for an international player” rule? This seems like the exact right situation to spend a 7th on him, and if he’s not ready for the main roster, hope he clears waivers and use the international spot on him.

This is the biggest freak athlete in this year’s NFL draft. I’d never heard of him till two days ago. He’s from a small village in Nigeria. He is 6-4 1/2, 306 lbs and jumps 10-10. Some folks in the NFL think he’ll go on Day 3 of the draft. Free story: nytimes.com/athletic/71683…

@bengals_sans This list is horribly dumb. So many mistakes. I can think of someone for almost every one of these teams that was better than Bernard. Lions: Theo Riddick Browns: Duke Johnson Vikings: Jerrick McKinnon AND Coradelle Patterson Commanders & Seahawks: J.D. Mckissic???

I accidentally made the funniest list ever Most seasons in MLB history with between 40 and 47 home runs, something that five different players have each done at least six times It's four of the greatest inner-circle, god-tier hitters that ever lived... and Adam F––ing Dunn

@BlugrassBall @nickbateman33 I haven’t found it to be a problem, yet…the “whichever team wins” spot works decently enough. But with too many it may be a problem, I do agree. Have all the 12-seed play in games be Tuesday. The 16-seed play-in games be Wednesday (no casual cares about those).

@sagaciousoaf @nickbateman33 I think adding the 12 play in games makes it harder for the casuals to fill out a bracket. Don’t even know the matchups until after Wednesday. With a couple play in games it’s not a big deal. With 12 it looks ridiculous.

Hot take I don’t think this is that bad, honestly….I think it’ll work pretty well Obviously no need to change something that’s perfect, but we’re just getting more games on Tuesday and Wednesday. I don’t love that a 17 loss power conference team could get a chance to make the tournament, but if it means 6 loss Belmont also gets a chance, I’m okay with it It’ll still be a 64 team tournament that tips off Thursday at 12:15 ET, just more madness before hand Hopefully this opens the door for 1 seed mid majors that lost in their conf tourney to get a chance - similar to Miami Ohio (aka Belmont) All around - this will get WAY too much hate for not being a huge change No need for outrage unless we start hearing rumors of 96 or 128

@nickbateman33 True. And I will cheer for a 10th seed Santa Clara as pposed to an 11th seed Texas, just to use this year as an examples. All I’m saying is that whatever the NCAA does, keep the perfection of an easy to fill out bracket that starts on Thursday. That’s what brings the casuals in.

@ZowsHotTakes @gehrenbergdfs Yup. “10% of the ball has to pass through (current) zone” means that there’s another line that can be drawn inside that zone such that only 1% of the ball has to pass through to be a strike.

@gehrenbergdfs Nothing changes. You are just moving the lines. Those 50/50 calls right on the edge remain, you are just changing the size of the zone.

@DerekCarty Of course not. We won’t even get close. Just a theory question. Batters were getting 25+ PAs against individual pitchers a year back I the 50s…so you could get a decent number of PAs after a few years.

Alright kids, buckle up. Here's why BvP is completely, 100% meaningless. Even if you think a certain batter "sees" a certain pitcher well, or his swing plane matches the pitch plane well, or any other plausible explanation for it, the fact is we're dealing with sample sizes too small. And that's not lip service. If a batter is 5-for-10 against a pitcher for a legitimate reason, there will be 10 others just like him that are 5-for-10 by random chance. By trying to be "right" about that one guy, you wind up being wrong about many others. You wind up being less accurate and less profitable if you're trying to use this for betting. You simply can't separate the legitimate guys from the random guys, which makes the entire exercise... yes, meaningless.

@DerekCarty Here’s a legit question, albeit one with no value presently - what number of PAs could render BvP meaningful? Prior to the 60s, with 8 teams per league, 3-man rotations and no inter league play, there are some examples of hitters with 200+ PAs against a pitcher.

@MattMcCarthy985 “It was the same for both teams” doesn’t mean shit when only one team is going to be affected by the bad calls. Maddux could only abuse the bad calls against Devon White, Bonilla and Craig Counsell. Livan had 6 different lefties/switch hitters to exploit.

@MattMcCarthy985 Which was significantly worse for the braves, who had 5 lefties and one switch hitter in their lineup (only the 7 and 8 batters were righty), whereas the Marlins had 2 switch hitters and just one lefty (their 8th batter).
