Even though his own father had 3 wives, Shri Rama chose the path of one devoted marriage. That is why he is called Maryada Purushottam, the one who set the highest standards of righteous conduct. Shri Rama is also considered a Surya Ansh, and Surya represents dharma and light. From his life we learn that a person rooted in sattva naturally remains loyal and devoted to one partner.
