#BREAKING Somali President tells Uganda "We can manage our security, thank you, and bye bye" Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud comments on Ugandan troop presence in Somalia a day after Ugandan army chief @mkainerugaba launched blistering attack on Turkey and threatened to pull out his troops from Somalia. HSM acknowledged Ugandan contributions to Somalia, thanked their sacrifice, fighting alongside Somali army. He concluded by saying SNA was now able to take over security duties of the country and it was time to bid Uganda farewell. "We should tell the Ugandans 'thank you', and ma'asalaam" Ma'asalaam is an Arabic/Islamic phrase that can loosely be translated as "bye bye".

#BREAKING The US government has reportedly cancelled entry visas for the Somali Speaker of parliament and other senior officials in the Hassan Sheikh government. Somali media is widely reporting that the A-2 (diplomatic) visa cancellation affects a number of senior officials close to the President and the Prime Minister. Adan Madoobe is the key enabler and enforcer of Somalia's alarming authoritarian drift under Hassan Sheikh. The deep crisis over the Somali provisional constitution, the dispute over future polls, the evisceration of the federal system and the creeping Barre-style centralised dictatorship - all can be laid at the door of this man. Well-done to the government of the United States. Time for coordinated international coercive diplomacy and less niceties to put back Somalia on a democratic, stable, healthier course. The move is not unprecedented. In 2022, the US government under the Biden administration, imposed a similar ban on key Farmaajo regime figures, accusing them of "undermining the democratic process."

Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda seem broadly aligned on Sudan. The three East African states seem now inclined to view the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) as a regional threat because it is dominated by Islamists, and likely to bring back Islamist rule. All three states prefer a secular civilian-led government in Sudan. Maintaining a level of diplomatic and political support for the Rapid Support Forces is not necessarily support for 'secular Sudan' but seen as means of containing the SAF. Gen Hemedti's latest East Africa tour must be understand within this wider regional context.

Three years ago, at the height of the Laas Anood fighting, I broke the story of Al-Shabaab's involvement in the conflict and specifically mentioned Abdi Madoobe as an AS commander with deep ties to AS Central in Jilib. The report was well-sourced and highly-credible. The backlash from some Somalia watchers/analysts, Somali Islamists and nationalists aligned with Mogadishu's destabilisation campaign in Somaliland was extraordinary. I received so much calumny and hate - the worst in my life. Guess what? The latest UN Panel of Experts report on Somalia for the UN Security Council now makes the same findings three years later and says exactly the same things I said in 2023. Just to be clear - I never spoke to the UN PoE and actually do not know them. VINDICATED !
