Ontario's government has spent $500 million on ads since coming into power. That's enough money to have DOUBLED the number of MRI machines. They're literally spending your money to tell you things are working – even when you know that they're not.

Recently gotten into sardines, best macros I've found, 200 cals, omega 3 oils, and 20grams of protein. Looks kinda gross and smells fishy which takes some getting used to but tastes like cooked salmon

This pathetic attitude is among the worst things about our political culture in Canada and I cannot reject it enough. It gets cloaked in the language of progressivism but it is deeply cynical, ugly, and regressive. Story time! Growing up, I was hugely inspired by RIM (BlackBerry). It was one of the reasons why I wanted to go to Waterloo. I thought it was so cool one of the most innovative companies on earth was an hour away from home. In fact, my program, Nanotechnology Engineering, was able to exist in part due to the philanthropy of Mike Lazaridis, who funded the Institute of Quantum Computing and Nanotechnology (along with the Perimeter Institute for theoretical physics, which is a brilliant asset for the province and country). Balsillie, for his part, has spent tens of not hundreds of millions of his personal wealth on advocacy and institutions to make Canada a better place. But he too was castigated in our media. Through high school, I saw how Canadas media took an axe to RIM founders (Mike and Jim), and basically cheered on the decline of the business against competition from Apple and Google. It was a complete disgrace. Well, in 2013 I got my second co-op job there, just as they rolled out BB10 (the QNX operating system). 6 weeks into my co-op, my entire department was laid off (Modems/Semiconductors). Nearly every one of my colleagues ended up moving to the US. Some of the most capable talent on earth, poached in weeks. It was loss that was absolutely devastating to witness. I have no doubt people like Bruce cheered on the spectacle, just like he would cheer the downfall of Shopify if it were to ever happen; despite the champion it’s been for the country, the thousands of good jobs it’s created, and all the spin-off businesses that have created huge wealth for Ontario. Well let me be clear that I will have none of this nonsense.

You don’t have to love Elon Musk to recognize what this headline says about us. A country that spends more time criticizing wealth creation than encouraging it sends a clear message to builders: your success is tolerated, not celebrated. Canada should be the best place in the world to build ambitious companies. Headlines like this make us look like we’re not quite ready for that.

I'm hesitating to shut down Parlay. I've tried almost everything to keep it alive except tweet about it, so here it goes... Every year, 100k students participate in class discussions on our platform. These are actual back and forth conversations between all students, not just the confident, extroverted ones. There is no obvious replacement for the class discussion experience we've created. With AI changing the way we think about learning, the case for discussion-based learning is even stronger than it was when we first started 9 years ago. (Discussion-based learning is a moat against AI generated work). Cumulatively, Parlay has hosted: - 200K class discussions in written and verbal formats - over 7M written ideas contributed - over 3M live speaking turns I'm radically open to paths to keep this going. If you think of an acquirer, strategic partner, or someone who can help carry this forward please DM/share. Thank you.💙

Ben started keeping Shabbat months ago. Every week he would come back and lightly nudge us to give it a try. Eventually it connected. I have fond memories of Sunday school followed by home-cooked meals and time to run outside in the Georgia heat. I remember connecting with my siblings. I remember dozing on a decades-old, worn-in couch at my grandparents' house. I remember having a day that was rooted in being deeply human. You felt like part of a community. You were part of a family. And on occasion a spark of awe would stun you while you sat looking at the sky. There was nowhere else to be because there was nowhere else to go. As the weeks went on and Ben kept raising the point, I found myself setting aside Saturday or Sunday to disconnect. I left the phone in the foyer and avoided other forms of work. The benefits of the Sabbath don't immediately reveal themselves. The first few weeks are largely spent in a kind of agitation. You find yourself often reaching for a device that isn't there. Then all of a sudden, you start to notice things. Small things. Like how how there are flowers blooming in a spot alongside your house that you never saw before. Or how there's one particularly nefarious squirrel with a spot on its chest that taunts your dog from the top of your fence. Then there are the bigger things. Like just how often your daughter looks at you when she's playing. Not for attention, but just to know you're there and looking back. Or how earnestly your wife is trying to prepare a new recipe for your family. Or how your elderly neighbor seems to be struggling with their day to day chores now. It's easy to give in to the eye roll reaction to hearing someone pitch the Sabbath as something new. It's obviously not. And all of these benefits are available without the ritual and especially without an app. But for better or worse, we're steeped in cultural programming where if you're not on your phone, the people you're around are. And that feeling permeates your lived experience. There's always somewhere else to be, either physically or technologically. It's possible to "see" all of these things without noting their importance. To Sabbath alone and with willpower is to take on a burden that makes surrendering to the day difficult. But if you Sabbath with the people in your life, surrender is something that can happen to you without effort. This project is largely a labor of love by Ben. And we don't want to oversell what we've made. It's just a screentime blocker at its core. But there's a rising chorus of people who are rediscovering this practice. And we think our product can help add to your experience (through subtraction). If you're interested in giving it a try, reply to Ben. We'd love to have you.

Yesterday @GetKoho made history becoming the first non-bank/IIROC company in Canadian history to directly connect to @INTERAC. We take the long road here, believing that if we own our stack end to end, we can translate better tech, lower costs and more humanity into our product experience. The banks remain 2 orders of magnitude bigger than us so the only way we win is if millions of Canadians (continue to) choose us. This partnership is a big step in that direction. I want to thank @INTERAC for a world-class partnership and also all the KOHO folks who pulled an all-nighter to seamlessly transition more than 2.5M accounts with zero downtime or disruption. Cookin' 🔥

It seems like the right steps are being taken (so far) to quell this hantavirus outbreak: the @WHO is coordinating across multiple countries, large scale contact tracing is underway, several Canadians are quarantining after returning home, and ill passengers are receiving care.

In all of Toronto maybe 20 of these coffee shops/small restaurants/convenience stores grandfathered into residential corners. Always beloved. Of course illegal across nearly all of N America. Put small commerce in the neighborhoods, in the parks, and let families walk. Progress!
