CLONOE INQUEST: Coroner to send findings to prosecutors The relatives of the men who were unjustifiably ambushed and shot dead by the SAS of the British Army 34 years ago at Clonoe Chapel in Tyrone gathered once again in a Belfast court this morning, still grappling with the emotional weight of the findings from a High Court judge serving as coroner, the Presiding Coroner, two weeks ago. Mr Justice Humphreys concluded that their loved ones should never have been fired upon that fateful night. Although coroners cannot assign criminal liability, the stark truth remains clear for anyone willing to read the final official verdict: Kevin Barry O’Donnell, Patrick Vincent, Peter Clancy, and Sean O’Farrell were effectively assassinated by British soldiers who were hiding behind a hedge in the darkness on that grim night in February 1992. Indeed, all available evidence, including forensic and ballistic data, points to that clear truth: instead of being apprehended and arrested as they could have been, these men were executed in cold blood. In light of these findings, Mr Justice Humphreys has committed to undertaking his statutory obligation to send a written report of the verdict to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) “as soon as is practicable”. This is the inevitable course of action given the weight of the evidence presented and his legal duty under the Justice Northern Ireland Act, 2002, and we welcome the coroner's decision. This is not about rewriting history; it is about righting wrongs, addressing injustices, and uncovering the truth behind the lies and cover-ups. The truth has emerged; now is the time for justice.
